View Full Version : Displaying Titles

Is there a rule of thumb for determining how long a title should be displayed on screen?

I have a title that's two paragraphs long, and it's difficult for me to determine what's too long and what's too short.

Not exactly a rule of thumb, but, I'd say long enough to read what it says, 5 or so seconds possibly. Just my own opinion though.

Thanks for the reply.

How do I know, though, if I read faster or slower than average person?

That is going to depend on the complexity of the words and the size of the words. anywheres from 4 sec per page to 2 sec. per word. So "the end" should be easy. :D

Years ago the rule of thumb was long enough to allow someone to read it 3 times. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I can see how those rules can make sense for simple titles, like the name of the film or "the end," but what about longer titles, such as an introductory narrative that's a few paragraphs long?

It seems that at 2 sec/word (or 3x the entire text) would be too long.

Maybe I should try to cut down the length of the narrative. :)

I have seen a lot of movies that the text went by way too fast. What if you did a voice narration to go along with the text. Then time would not be an important factor.
