hello all, lemme first start out by saying thanks veryh much for all the help you've given me thus far. although your help has aided me greatly, i'm still a total newb, and require lots and lots of babying :P

anyway, on to the questions. be prepared to smack me in the face at how nubious these questions are.

i was recently trying to make a scimitar.. a curved sword, and i realised that i had to sub patch the model to make the curved edge smooth enough, but then i realised, if i smoothed the whole model, the pointy-ness at the top becomes rounded- out. this doesnt just go for the scimitar model, but really everything that has both smooth parts to it, and also "sharpened" or boxed, or angular parts to it.

another question, this one kind of coveres a broader base.

texturing. i have no idea how to do it whatsoever. for an example.

i wanted to make my scimitar model look like real metal, with reflections and everything, but somehow, no matter how hard i tried, i couldnt get it quite right, i played around with the color panel, the reflection panel, diffuse, specularity, and such and such, but alas, couldnt get anything that would fit a real metal look. help!

and last, i would like to know where some good tutorials on the web are, and maybe even some books that you would recommend to me, a beginner.

thanks alot!
