View Full Version : "point on edge" detection ?

I'm looking for a tool, plug or script) that would allow
to select points of a model according to their "touching" edges of other polygones.
Finally the tool could also merge automatically the point to the polys.
Actually I'd need something like the merging points function
but that works with a point and an edge, not with two points.

Let's take an example :
I have two polys, A and B.
Poly B has a point that is exactly located on one of the edges of
poly A. Usually if I want to "link" the 2 polys I should create a new point on
poly A and drag/snap it to the point of poly B, then merge them.
But the fact is that on the models I work on I often have tens of cases
like this and it take much time to find all the points that are already
on edges (correct axis) but not merged.
Is there any plug allowing to select all the points that are at a given distance of
the edge of a poly (excepted of course the poly(s) they belong to) ?
And in a second time (but I guess I'm dreaming there…) this plug could
automatically merge these points to the polys they touch ?

If there is one, I haven't heard of it but I could use it.

In a rush, but will this LScript (http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2792) help you out?

Noooooooooo… !!!
Am I dreaming or what, this is exactly the tool I was looking for !!!

ONCE AGAIN my issue is solved by people of the community !

Thank you so much Greg that's a great thing you gave there.
Besides when I read the thread of Spinquad I thought of a plug'in
(a .p file) and discovered it was a Lscript, which is even better as I
can use it on both my Mac and PC !

Congrats !

If I can just add a comment, but I'm not sure that it's possible,
it would be that the script allows a kind of tolerance in distance of
the points and the edges, for the cases you did not model with
enough accuracy… Eventually just like the merge points tool that
has a distance setting. This because I personnaly expect to use
your script in cases quite different from the example you gave (co-planar
polys whit bandsaw). I rather need that to connect items that are non
co-planar, on quite complicated meshes (I do urban spaces models).

Anyway this is already a fantastic tool you made, thanx again !

Thanks, glad you like it, :D

Unfortunately I'm busy working with Paul Smith (pooby) on a bone rigging LScript and won't be expanding this in the near fuure.
Too much to do & too little time.

Now that's too bad.

mmm… I can't forget that for me the earliest update of LW was 7.5
as in 8.0 they almost only improved bones and character rigging,
while very few was made for modelisation, especially in architectural viz.
Hey does'nt LW have now all it needs for characters animation ???

Actually for me LW updates are tools like YOU make !

However this is already very cool,
if your script for bones rigging is as helpfull than this one
then I wish I start to work in this area !
