is it just me, or is the Surface Opacity Alpha Channel mode broken
in LW 8?

i was afraid of that, lol

I get no variation on the aplha channel at all, ie no shades of gray....
its either black or white.

How are you applying it? Can you post some step by step instructions, or screenshots?

Sounds like the well-known problem with alpha map and raytrace transparency. With raytrace transparency on, the alpha values are always either 0 or 1.

The usual solutions are to either not use raytrace transparency, or do an extra render with raytrace transparency off to get the correct alpha map.

We are currently testing out a plugin in-house that fixes this problem. It should be available for free shortly.
