i am looking for way to animate object with constant speed along 3d curved path.

There is an plugin called constant speed. Look it up on http://www.flay.com. Just animate everything normally, then run plugin (under generic plugins).

There's also a plugin called CruiseControl which is part of LightWave,
but I've never managed to make it do anything useful.

For a start it doesn't seem to remember my settings after I apply them.

I find a lot of the motion plugins seem to be unfinished, or need a LOT more
tighter integration with LightWave.

Motion is one area LW needs a BIG update IMO.

actually it does work! just done a quick test, but if you apply say
10km/hr speed, and then later double click the plug in it won't
reflect the speed you set earlier, it defaults to 1m/s

there's also an alternate thing that i do. the trick is create evenly spaced points along the length of the spline (that's going to be exported as a motion path in layout). to do that, you can try to create three more splines to form a patch. of course, you have to use the Length option - this is what creates the evenly spaced points. after the patch has been made, delete everything except the points you need, and from which you make a spline. then load that spline as a motion curve in layout. in this case CurveConstraint will work nicely (or PathAnimationIA :D).

thanks all for helping out.

feature request.
ideal way for animating cars planes etc.

you draw path in modeler load it in layout. assign it to object and play with speed curve in graph editor.
