I've searched in forums and manuals to find out how to change a viewports background colors in layout 8 and can't get anything to work. The BackgroundColor tag in cfg files doesn't seem to work.

I've got modeler viewport background colors changed but can't change them in layout.

Anyone know how to do this on a PC?

1) Find the file: LWHUB.cfg

2) Force load it into a plain text editor such as NotePad

3) Add the following lines:

ToolButtonColor 100 110 125
StateButtonColor 100 110 125
ActionButtonColor 100 110 125
DialogButtonColor 100 110 125
DragButtonColor 100 110 125
BackgroundColor 90 90 105
InfoAreaColor 90 90 105
InfoAreaTextColor 0 0 0

4) Save the file and load up LightWave, it _should_ change the colours

This is my colour setup, you can of course do your own. The numbers after the parameters are R G B. So 000 000 000 = Black and 255 255 255 = White

LightWave does limit certain colour combinations for some reason, you just have to experiment.

Well for some reason that doesn't work for me on LW 8.

I assume you meant to change LWHUB8.cfg and not LWHUB.cfg.
LWHUB.cfg changes do nothing. LWHUB8.cfg changes some of the button colors but not the background for several different RGB combinations. I've tried 120 120 120; 200, 200, 200; several versions in the 120's, etc, etc and nothing changes the background colors. It's still the dark gray. (about 100, 100, 100).

I don't believe you can change the bkgnd in Layout.
