According to the manual, if you want an object to be able to be seen through semi-transparent hypervoxels, say, some smoke sprites, you need to set the Refraction Option to Ray Tracing +
Backdrop on the HyperVoxels Shading, Environment tab.
Well, i don't seem to have a HyperVoxels Shading, Environment tab, at least not when i use sprites. It's there for surface and volume HVs, but not sprites.

I have a character with bushy SasLite eyebrows smoking a cigarette. Whenever the smoke passes in front of his eyebrows, the Sasfur disappears from the polys covered with smoke and those polys flash with some sort of weird video artifacting looking visual nonsesnse.

So Smokey putting out a forest fire is impossible in Lightwave?

You must do multiple passes and composite the passes together. This is because Saslite is a post-render image process. This is the normal way it acts.
