short answer...yes they are the same.
skytracer2 replaced skytracer and the "tag " is still there for the original
although i have'nt a clue why?

different short answer -- I don't believe they are the same. However, I can't remember where I read the differences, since they aren't in the manuals. I'd suggest using SK2 though, because it's documented (at least a little) in the manuals...

Long answer ;)

Nope, they ain't the same - they fulfill the same function i.e. creating nice cloudscape backdrops for your LightWave scenes but SkyTracer 2 offers many improvements:

True volumetric Hypervoxel-style clouds
VIPER preview
SkyBaker to process skies into image maps/Light Probe images
Higher degree of control - particularly over clouds types
Accurate positioning of Sun according to date/location/distance
Ability to add custom texture mapping to clouds

I guess SkyTracer (1) is still included -

a. So as not to break older scenes (i.e. Legacy Plugins)
b. 'cause it's a fair bit quicker than ST2
