Apple seems to be building a stable of software tools which are alternatives or counterparts to those we're used to from Adobe, Microsoft, etc..

Since 3D illustration and animation is no fad, and since Apple wants to be the movie-making platform, what's keeping them from snapping up a 3D developer, or writing their own 3D app?

It would be nice to have an option that really flies on the Mac and truly utilizes the PPC.

For almost 20 years, the model has been that Company A makes the box, Companies B-Z make the software.

Maybe it's time to change that model, not just for the little i-Apps, but for the big guns, too..

its a no go.
not enough ROI
theyd be competing with Maya and Lightwave (driving a stake into the heart of the growth of the 3d market btw)
and they would have significant challenges trying to beat the experts in a field that they have had a less than stellar success rate in (quickdraw 3d, which btw is a fantastic technology, which failed the way betamax failed).

personally... Pixar should port Renderman to the mac. Create dynamic, kick ***** conversion utilities, so that any package could export a renderman file, and then make it cheap, real cheap. then half of the problems with LW will simply dissapear.

Jobs must see this, he has to know that there is a huge market for Renderman.
