Can tracer fire from a machine gun be done with DF? I can probably find a way to do it with AFX but want to know if there is a way with Fusion and perhaps some other app.

This is something I'm interested in as well.

Short of rendering out in Lightwave. Mind you I have no paint plugin for DFX+, so would that be required?

It seems no one really looks at this board so I checked out http://www.cgtalk.com
I dont even have LW so I really needed to figure out a way to do this in DF. Luckily DF's particle systems came through for me. The only thing I'm having trouble with so far is getting the color and color over life dialed in. If you have any luck or you find some high traffic DF boards, let me know.

www.pigsfly.com (not online for some strange reason)
http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=6 (vfxtalk)

Also, for the particle stuff I think CMI Studios just did some free tutorials:

I think you can do it easily with animated masks and blurs.

Check the free tutorial at CMI Studios (duderender has included the link to them) on creating smoke like noise in DF to see what i mean. Itīs one of the latest.
By using some of the techniques shown there you could easily create trace fire (several masks travelling in line with scale modifiers, blur, hot spot, the noise could also be useful providing it doesnīt stray off too much from the fire line,....)

And fast to render.

cheers

Did you check the tutorials at eyeonline and the tips and techniques section?
theres a macro for muzzle flash amongst other things and there used to be a section on animated masks in the original courseware I
