View Full Version : can a lwo file be edited with a text editor?

...like a scene file? if so, whateditor works best.

bbedit reads only code, but I was hoping there might be a way to go in and edit surface parameters.

but I think you can just pop it open with notepad or a hex editor?

Hi,

the .lwo format is pretty simple (as these things go) but it isn't entirely text based, so you'd need something more advanced than a text editor to read it.

Most surface parameters a likely to be stored as raw data rather than ascii equivalents, making them non-trivial to edit outside of lightwave.

If you let me know a bit more about what you're trying to do, maybe I can suggest an alternative way,

just musing, really. I've got some objects with a lot of surfaces sharing the same parameters and maps. Rather than altering them by going in one by one I was wondering about being able to swap out image maps or map settings on certain surfaces all at once. this technique has come in handy with the lws files. of course map swapping can be done by trading the images and re-saving the object under a new name, but I was... just musing.
