Anyone here have experience with these devices (or similar) for archiving old VHS/Hi-8/ or 3/4" material?

I have used a Pioneer DMR-E80H (which is similar) as well as a couple of Phillips models.
These units are good for quick DVD burns. Don't exceed the SP or M2 (2hour) record time - I think quality suffers too much.
The Phillips models allow you to set chapters automatically every 5 minutes or can do manual after recording - the Pioneer does not do this (at least mine).
The Pioneer has nicer menus.

Can't speak to current Pioneer models, but FWIW my discontinued DVR-7000 does a very good job in one-hour (9.xx mb/s) and two-hour (5.11 mb/s) video modes. I does give me a choice of "invisible" automatic chapters at 3 and 5 minute intervals; may be others also, I always leave it set at 3 minutes.

I think I'll focus on getting a good price on the DVR520H-S. It has an 80GB hard drive:

Thanks all.
