Hey Guys

I am having a few problems trying to make a cd (compact disc) look like a cd intead of a dull looking disc. :(

Ive tried a few different lights at different angles with no luck

Any ideas / tips would be greatly appreciated : ]

I've always wondered how to do this too.

I know you'll need to use the BRDF shader which allows anisotropic
specular reflection. But I've not managed to master the settings.

Try this - http://www.3DInk.com/CDrom7.lwo

I once faked a cd very quickley. I put scanned a real cd, cleaned it up a little with photoshop and maped it onto a 3d disk.

Worked quite well for stills. As for the anisotropic reflections. I think i used a red, green and blue image map on an incidence angle. I check to see if i still have the model tomorrow.

being who i am, me

A CD is acctually made up of two different layers, one is transparant and the other is the burt to surface. The nice light effects happen when the ligt is defracted as it passes through the top layer, as it continues to reflect it spreads further appart, this give the nice shinny color effect, to properly recreate this in LW i think might be imposible!

This was one of my old attempts, I think I used a shader, not sure but I can send you the scene if you think it's any good.

HowardM, I got your post, and THANX!
here's my slightly modified version of it.
I only changed the smoothing for the edges.
Otherwise, it's all your work.
Thanx a zillion!
I've been looking for a decent CD.
................md :)
P.S. BTW, I "may???" have changed the textures, but I "think?" I changed them back to what you had?
if not, let me know and I will set it back.
Great work, either way :)

MD! Where have you been?!

Youre welcome, enjoy!

hahahahaha.......... That was too funny :)

No, I've been away for a bit.
I liked the old Newtek forum better, as I didn't have to wait on all these little icons.
But, I also like the way "this" one works better.

Also, my stupid neck has been killin me lately, and thus, I haven't been much on the net.....or the computer, for that matter.

But I have some free tuts to post up, but I don't know if anyone would care?
Let me know?

They are of some topics that never get brought up, but are also very abscure and (in my opinion) very important.

They have to deal with copying key frames and what nots, using the graph editor.
I didn't even know how to do this stuff, untill I got hired recently by an animator for tech support.
I "LOVE" doing tech support for animators, and will head in that direction for the future.

I would post up the work I helped on, but it's NDA and I can't.

But, the client said I could use all of the tech tutorials I made for him, to post for others to maybve be helped from too.
Let me know if you or anyone else wants me to post them, and I will.

...............md :)

do you need to ask?
by the way, check out the Motion Designer stuff Ive put up here in the past month!

04-02-2003, 10:21 PM
I'll get that stuff posted up some time tomorrow.
I need to slightly rewrite them, as they were wrote for that client.

Oh, and can you repost those links, as I wasn't here during the chnge over.
thanx......................md :)

hehe theres too many, i went nuts for a few weeks! so just search here for either my name or MD or Motion Designer, even some Saslite.... :)

04-03-2003, 02:55 AM
i'll do a search for those and get back to ya.
And I'll get those tuts worked up to post, later on today.
They may already be good to go, but I also think that they may have personal info on them for that client that may need to be changed a bit.
but no biggie, I can fix that in a second anyway.
..........md :)
