View Full Version : LW8- new ver. old skin

I know this is a purely cosmetic (not important) topic, but why did Newtek take 3 steps backwards and give LW[8] an ugly 5.x skin?

Theory #1: I think it was designed by an Amiga. Not "with" an Amiga... but "by" an Amiga.

Theory #2: Vintage music is cool, vintage clothing is cool, thus, vintage UI is really cool!

Theory #3: Tim Jenison is allergic to gradients and rounded corners.

Theory #4: A minimalist art exhibit was in town and Newtek was inspired.

Theory #5: Newtek made a deal with the devil to design the new UI... sadly the devil isn't very good at UI design. :(

I have to say that I like the smooth look of 7.5, but hey LW8 does what I need it to do, so if I like it or not I will still use it. :) It would be nice to be able to change it to the version you like. I'm sure that would take quite a bit of work though.

there was a HUGE discussion here whee many submitted their own renditions of what LW 8 should look like.. It was fueled by a post that Duece had started containing some hidious (sorry DoubleD....) conceptual screens.

Despite many ingenious suggestions by accomplished artist here, NT remained steadfast in their decision to go 5.0 on us.

So i took their last design and and came up with my own rendition..... I just wanted the borders and bevels gone......

Well, the only thing I DO NOT like about [8] is the GUI ...

archiea: this is much better on my eyes! (like [7] was, too)

From what I've seen, the LW8 UI looks ugly to me. I really don't understand why they decided to throw away the previous look. I think the UI is important - well not as important as the tools, but hey it's supposed to be a User Interface, Not Ugly Interface.

One thing I'd like to see in 8 is a pop-up list in the Display Prefs where you could choose which look you want (8,6/7, 5?)

Any chance to have this implemented ?

Looks great on the mac!!!, anyway who cares!!!. I think it looks nice and clean, devoid of any silly clutter!!!. Anyhow it's the render window i'm interested!! nothing else.

i think the new UI is unreadable.
When i open the display options, per example, Oh my god. Can't see what i'm looking for.
After a lot of discussions about UI, a lot of nice post by users and Nt, i can't understand why we get that ugly thing.

I suggess to read the post named "UI notice" too. There is a lot of fogotten things in the UI.

...and we can't change the color of the right tool background...

I hope it will change in the next 8.x version.

You don't call bevels and borders clutter?

archiea I like your interface style! :D

I like the look of 8, but it would be nice if we could skin it. I think there had been some talk of that when they were writing 6.

Hey Matt, I also like the vX design like so many others do, but there's two things I dislike about vX.

Firstly, I think all the hotspots for stuff (frame script markers and Scene Editor...well, everything actually) are too small. I tried how fast I could navigate from frame to other by moving the cursor over the picture of the Scene Editor and when I used the same speed I use now to do stuff in LW I almost always missed by a frame or so. I can't even imagine what that small hotspots would be like in bigger resolutions...

Second thing..."Last Updated 25.01.04" ;)

Okay I just started reading the other threads. (I did a search before starting this thread and none of those came up.) I get the whole easy on the eyes, "don't distract me from my work thing", but it feels like I'm using a product made by discreet*. Actually, I guess that would make LightWave "fit in" with their compositors (or Mirrage), but the last thing I want to think of when using LightWave is 3DSMax. So, I guess darker colors are good, but I still can't shake the feeling that I accidentally opened version 5.6.

Besides, I'm allergic to gradients and rounded corners

07-08-2004, 04:02 AM
while it does share some similarities with v5.5 and v5.6 it looks nothing like v5. and it diffinitly looks a lot better than v6, and imho also better than v7(.5).

and whille there is some stuff i would do differently and like changed, its not half as bad as you are saying. its easy on the eye and while not exactly a huge step forward, not one backwards either.

no offense ment since its obviously a matter of opinion, but i find archiea's to be quite boring, lifeless and uninspiring, which would be a real step backwards compared to the v8 ui.

07-08-2004, 04:42 AM
Archiea's may look boring, but all he did was get rid of the bevels. I think everyone is so oposed to the bevels because they make to program look old.

And Tim being allergic to gradients? Man, that must be like being allergic to latex :p

Why is Tim on here anyway, he should be busy doing his job; whipping programmers :p

No..No.. i hate 3d max's interface.

I like the new interface, it suits me fine. It's neutral looking, sits in the background, I hardly ever notice it. I can focus on my work. What could be better than that?
