View Full Version : getting really sharp, star-shaped glints on highlights

hi guys- i am making a deliberately cheesy logo, which i want to be all golden and glinty- you know those 'star' type glints you get on really cheesy golden overlit awards on TV?

have experimented with bloom and corona, but they only give you a really "soft fuzzy" kinda glint, I'm after something a bit "harder"...

any advice?

Maybe a lens flare with a star filter would get you what you want?

no, i don't think so as that is just 1 lens flare applied to a light source, i actually want it to glitter on the highlights on the letters as they catch the light.

Well, there's no rule that says you have to do it the "right" way, so how about creating a light with a projection image in the shape that you want? You could also limit it to effect specular only.

For that matter, you could make glint geometry (or blings), and animate the blings. Usually the type of highlights that you are talking about extend off the geometry anyway, so a bling object with a transparency gradient would probably look nice.

I think a lot of those effects you are seeing are actually lens flares added as a post process. I have achieved decent effects by parenting a point light to some text, turning it's intensity to zero and animating the lens flare. The star filter has a rotation angle envelope and there are intensity and dissolve envelopes for flares. By playing with the settings you can get cheesy animated glints galore.

thanks guys, yeah I've put some lights with lens flare in, just hard to get the glints "glinting" quite realistically if you're doing it manually.

i thought there might be some way to apply a starry type procedural or image map to corona..? but looks like maybe not, corona takes too long to render anyway.

I have after effects, and have actually got some other trapcode products (shine), so may have to look into starglow- looks like "just the ticket".

those text glints are cool! did u do that with digital fusion? i don't have it unfortunately.

howard, any clues on how to create a starry tpe procedural (or should you use an image map)? had a couple of goes but the result was decidedly un-starrylike!

Yep, well actually DFX+ and it took all but 5 seconds to create. Pulls the glints from the specular Highlights on the image. You can pick the color, shape or angle, and how much flare it gives off.

omeone- that plug-in is exactly what i need! thanks!i have quite a bright reflective text object and it tends to go a bit nuts on some of the front face white reflections, and i need to take the threshold up to like 2000% to get a decent result in those areas, but then don't get any stars in other areas, which look equally white to the naked eye, but must be a bit lower in luminance or something. Works really well when i take my reflection image off- take a look:

...never had occasion to use it myself though, I just remebered a guy called DarkEkko saying it was very good.
