Three bands chase into the screen wrap round the outside of invisible objects and the camera follows them as they duck and dive up and down. "Unfurling" all the time like the exhaust of three aeroplanes flying in unison.

I've tried building a model of the bands (hacked up a globe with a stencil drill and stretched it out of shape), parenting a spotlight to the camera and following the face of the object around. But it looks rubbish.

Anyone have any an idea? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

not too hard if what your looking for is in fact like jet exhausts.

First in modeler

Take your object and pick the points that you want the bands to follow, in the order you want the bands to go.
So if you want the band to follow a line that is like the equator of your object, you would pick any point and then continue around the equator in sequence to where you want it to end.
Hit CTRL-P
that makes a spline
get the spline and cut it and paste it in another layer.

Make that spline into a motion file and save it.
delete spline
save object



In Layout

load object

add emmiter
For emitter load the motion file you saved previously
get some particles going
give them some smoke texture

play it out

the emitter will follow exactly the object and emit smoke like jet contrails in the process.

oh yea
either dissolve object to be unseen

or

(haven't checked this part but it should work)
don't load the object at all
but just add emmiter and load the motion file.

For future refrence

this is how you make a car follow terrain.

follow the road as you highlight points
make spline
make motion
save motion

in layout load terrain
load car
load saved motion to car
car follows road
