I'm finally looking at upgrading my system with the Supermicro X5DA8 etc. Does anybody know if there is any performance benefits using Xeons with 1Mb cache over the standard 512kb chips?

1Mb cache chips appear to be approx the same money as the next fastest 512kb chip i.e 3.0Ghz 512kb comparible to 2.8Ghz 1Mb chips.

And is chip speed over cache or vice versa the same for a VT & LW8 use?

Cheers,

Hi, John.

If I'm correct, when you say 1 meg cache, you're talking about L3 cache. According to an article on Tom's Hardware, a large L3 cache is good for squat (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030811/index.html).

I would use standard 512k L2 cache Xeons and put the money saved into ram or hard drives.

Thanks for that link. It's a really useful article to a knee-jerk solution. Think that sums that one up unless anyone else has anything VT specific things to add?
