Patiently...

...and looks like a bunch of layers of textures.

Yepp, different surf names, maybe some weightmaps and lots of texture layers. Even though it doesn't look so complex on second sight... Can't be more than 10 layers per surface, I'd say.

So, like... the skull on the chest is proceduaral? That's a neat trick (doubtful).

Perhaps it's from 3D Total Textures. They've just released a CD of sci-fi textures at this link 3D Total Textures (http://www.3dtotal.com/textures_v7/)

That clearly uses image maps!!! If it doesn't, I'll grow a fourth leg!

Obviously the skull and such are image maps, but I'd bet most of the grime and such is procedural, though that could be image mapped also.

Look here for excellent info on using procedurals:

you can do with original lw procedural texture, learn how to use that by apply on a ball, ones layer at times, and one blending mode at time.

i build a lot of different presets with procedural, which i upload on luxology web, dowload it and play with it, i think you can learn a lot of thing.

download from newtek web the tutorial about material and texturing and tweak, tweak tweak.
