to do it properly you need anisotropic rendering, since the radial pattern on a cd is created by millions of microsopic holes arranged in radial rings (well actually a spiral)

To do it on the "cheap" I have often created a rainbow texture that 'looks' like the rainbow on a CD, that is, a fake radial rainbow. In photoshop try polar coordinates to a linear rainbow.

When animating the CD you can map the 'fake rainbow' to the cd surface and rotate it in time with the CD's motion. It actually does look convincing. it's not the best solution, but works well in a pinch, or untill you can get the right plugin. You can use the same technique for other anisotropic disc effects.

As for the 'real deal' I believe Lightwave has built in anisotropic shaders now... but I have yet to require, and thus 'figure them' out. :)

good luck

you can try here (http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20002) and here (http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17436&highlight=cdrom) for some ideas too

I used a scanner to grab the effect of the cd/dvd rainbowing for an animated logo for a client a few years back, made the disc shape, and then mapped it to the top and bottom. It worked great!!
