Any insights as to how I can animate a spring in lauout? I mean a plain spring, like those seen in shock absorbers etc.
Its easy to create a spring in modeler and there are free plugins to do so.

but...

How can I animate it so that is contracts/expands. Simple stretching won't do obviously.

Any tricks or plugins that do that already?

Yes, the easiest way is to use endomorphs.

First you start with the lathe tool and make your spring closed. Then use the same profile that you used to make the closed spring to make an open one.
(Doing it this way is very important, the point order of the two springs must match otherwise they will morph wrong.)
Then put one spring in a background layer to the first and use the BKGtoMORPH tool. And there you have it.

NOTE: How you center the open or closed spring in relation to the other determines how the spring extends. IE - in both directions. Or just one or the other.
