View Full Version : Parenting causes items to disappear

I am sure I am an idiot here... or perhaps my pathetic 32MB built-in video card is at fault.

I have an object I modeled in 3 layers. I bring it in to Layout and parent it to a null so I can animate the three pieces together, but as soon as I assign a piece as a child of the null, it disappears!

Why?!?! Am I doing something wrong? Is there some secret setting I am missing? I have looked through the manual and the Net for an answer but do not see anything, so I assume it is either something so simple it didn't even warrant mention, or my video interface just cannot handle it.

Either way, can somebody give me a clue?

my first guess is that you've modeled your object very far from the origin and that you don't have "parent in place" checked
in the general otions panel (o). Now as soon as you parent
one of your three pieces to the null, it jumps right out of the
viewable area. You can check if it is still in there in one of the
three ortogonal views (top, side, back) by pushing shift+a
when your mouspointer hovers over that window.

To parent the objects to the null without having them jumping around,
either use the parent in place option or even better
use it but before you parent the objects make sure that your
3 pieces are centered around the origin ( f2 in modeler).

good luck and happy lightwavin'

Thanks arsad!

Turns out the object is almost inside the camera... not sure how my renders were turning out the way they were, but mystery solved!
