Looking at it, Very good work! - It reminds me of a cross between a Honda Crx-Si and a non-imported anymore Mazda Rx-7.

The only thing it needs is some better surfacing/lighting to make such good work look even better.

Some New dude on here posted some Chrysler Crossfire stuff along with his approach to "shooting" cars traditionally and in CGI. Worth reading.

It really is great modeling, just needs a fresh coat of paint.

Good luck with the school thingy!

Wow thats my kinda car.

Good modeling, texturing could do with a little.

how many hours have gone into this?

Man, I have the polk plug ins which include wheelie. I would love to animate this thing :).

But I have no time right now.

I was wondering....could you make a render with the hood paint the same white as the rest of the car.

It looks unfinished like alot of the street cars down here in L.A. where all the kids had just enough money to buy the new hood but they never get it painted.

But I am also aware that many like that multi colored look.

Hey,

Thanks for the wuick replies. Yeah i know i absolutely hate the paint as well as the lighting. I have been doing test renders for some time now but i just cant get the right look and feel to the carr.

Intuition: Whats this thing about polk plug ins. And yes i wold love to animate it too, ad had originally planned to but due to lukc of time im goin to be unable to. Yeah i hate the hood. I think ill try make it carbon fiber hood which will be much better or welse ill just leave it the same.

99sproth: Not sure what kinda car it is actually just one i made up form pure imagination. Wel actually it was inspired by alot of other cars but not intentionally. Umm its been over 300 hours of modelling. Yes i know its so muhc but i just did bit everyday after schoo. The original concept that came from my drawigns into modeller was absolutely crap so i spent heaps of time teaking it and trying to get it right.

glassesfx: Thanks alot mate. Ive got no idea what the my car reminds me off but now u said that i does remind me a bit of the rx-7 (i take that as a full compliment might i add). Yes i know as i said beofre i would love to see this baby texture, lit, and rendered well but im not the best at those 3 things so its a bit hard. I have read that crossfire thing, very detailed but i dont really understand it fully. Ill give it a shot and see what i can come up with, but dont hold bakc in making the set for me then posting it (jokes) :p .

Anyway thatnks for all the fast replies ill hope to have some new renders to u ASAP.

Cheers.... Si

PS: if anyone feels the urge to send me a copy of FPrime please dont hold back ;) lol.....i wish.

Nice,

I like it.

ABout the polk plug ins.

Polk is made by Worley, makers of F-Prime, its an older set of plug ins but still very useful.

WHeelie is included in the plug in set. Wheelie lets you animate wheels automatically.

You apply wheelie and just move your car around and the wheels will roll perfectly based on movement.

Would like to see your car rolling along with a nice camera pan circling the car as it rolls. I have F-Prime as well. Its rocks eh?

Ahh, that thing looks WAY better in black (though its damned fine modeling all the same). I really like the wheels you made, really works with the cars lines.

Dude, Thats much better now! It's funny how just the "perception" of something changes it entirely. Thats why I've always dug the name "Lightwave". Very cool!

Anyway, If I may be so bold? I would like to ask if you've ever experimented with smoothing?

Parictualry, using very small powers of like .0001 with high iterations? say 100,000 of them?

If your carful about your selections this would make this model shine. You need to spend a long-night getting the edges almost perfect. Make a selection set of just the edges, inver it and make a selection set for that also.

If I were to smooth it I would do this. I would think in planer sections, select one, say the hood (all of these selections will NOT have the edges slected) and smooth it with .0001 power at say 10,000 per smooth. Do a few and play around with how much does what. After I smoothed all the planer sections I would select them all (which probably should look like the entire car minus edges and things you dont want smoothed at all (more about that later) and smooth that the same way. It will take a sec. cause of the high iterations which is o.k. If I can do it on a 500mhz box...

some of your areas ( I love the ducts you have on the hood over the tires but the border on out-of-control. spend some time with the smooth stuff like I said with the same approach. I think this would make it really nice. But I am just giving advice, either way and we will both live. I love the new render. kick-***!

the only c&c if you wonted to nitpick is that it lack clean lines. look at my marks.
but still look great.:D

Looks good, I like the tires. maybe some more work on the lighting is needed.

I'm not sure if your using sub-d or not... if you are try re-freezing it a couple numbers higher, and make sure you triple your polys before render. The SAY that quads render OK, but in my experience THAT AINT SO. and it may be tempting to run poly reducing tools... if your not animating the thing... don't do it len!

I've been fighting with a sub-d mini for WEEKs now so I know the nightmare you are in... but it's almost there! just need to add some geometry to the seams and fix some of the rendering errors and you will have a pretty sweet image!

oh, and in spite of what is contained in most sub-d tutorials about making cars, using sub-patch weighting to control curves is a BAD idea. it controls the geometry in both directions, thus you end up with the correct curve one way but poliginal artifacting in the other.. the only way I have found to truly add sharp creases and edges is to add a slice right where you wish to control the surface. The closer together the sharper the crease. Another thing this does is control Lightwave's smoothing, so adding geometry near the edges will help describe the surface for smoothing too, thus no more odd shifts in colour.

hope this helps.

can you tell I'm Canadian... 'colour' he he

hey all

Intuition: Thanks ill check it out, soudn perfect for if i animate the car

Chiaroscuro: Thanks yeah i think the blacks a pretty big imporvement

Shivath: hahaha yeah it would be pretty awesome to be able to drive this baby around

glassefx: Yeah i understand what your saying. I think the models not to clean purely because it started out as a peice of crap and ive just refined the model as i went along so this has caused some dodgey eging etc. I am in the process of working on it tho.

shaol: Thanks alot for that "nitpicking" often makes the diffference between a okay picture and a good one.

riki: Yeah im thinking aobut doing a new scene im getting kind of bored witht the curent one

iandavis: Yeah i do use weights a bit purely to make a cleaner mesh. I try limit the amount i use so its not to bad. Ill try you advice. hahahah i speel it like colour as well dont know if thats how us ausies are supposed to but who really cares
:p

Okay thanks for all the replies. If you have any ideas for a new render preferable something more interesting than the boring studio shots i havwe at the moment i would love to hear them. Im thinking about a night drag scne or something but as its for a poster i think i have to keep it sorta simplistic if that makes sense.

Hope to hear from u guys soon and ill work on some concepts for the new renders

Later,

Si

Hey all
A couple of nights ago i set up another render and just left it to do its thing. The next day i turned on my monitor and it was just finishing off but as soon as it did finish lightwave closed for no reason and i was unable to save the image. i was rendering at 3200x2400 as it nedds to be pretty high res for the final thingy. Please help me out here ive tried everything, and all i know is it only happens when i render with a large resolution. :(

Hope someone can help,
Si

Are you running xp? Whats your system spec?

I find when I do a render that takes over an hour, my pc thinks lightwave has crashed and closes it.

Make sure theres enough ram, could be that it doesn't have enough ram to storre all the data when the render completes.

hey guys,

Sorry no replies for so long. Nets been down over during the week as we were getting ADSL put in

99Sproth: I fixed the problem defraged the computer and did disk clean up i think it was just my comp being a bi*%^. :p

Anyway Ive got a neew render. Done using F-Prime , radiosity, and motion blur tell me what u think. I dont mind the pic but im not sure about the car paint. What clour would look good?

Try accenting the current color on different areas with the following:

Red 187
Green 44
Blue 0

With added specularity on this color I kind of like the look. Subjective of course.

I tried it using the "color burn" option in photoshop on the image you posted. Opacity 100%, flow 14%.

I changed the color of your car in Photoshop to a color that makes it stand out from the background. I felt like the white was getting lost against the sky.

Yellow isn't my favorite color for a car. I think few cars look good yellow, but that's my hang up.

I know it's too late to change and probably won't effect your grade but the way the air intakes on the hood cross the seam to the fender kind of bothers me. Does someone make a car like that?

Also, are you adjusting reflection amount based on incidence angle (for a fresnel effect)? Are you using a shader for your specularity like BRDF or something to give you more realistic specular highlights? If not, you may want to look into it. I haven't tried doing a car like finish in a while though.
