the pyramidal TIFF filetype allows to request different resolutions according to the "zoom level" it can be used in web browsers (with plug-ins i think) but it would be super for textures dynamically loading according to the proxymity of the object....

ok your plug is interresting but... what is this ECW format ?

if i get geoTIFF from a GIS provider can i use your plug-in in a way ?

Hi Tektonik,
ECW is a wavelet compressed file format from the GIS world, developed by ERMapper. Check out www.ermapper.com for more info on that, including some tools to compress (geo).tif to ECW.
Unfortunately the free versions only compress 500MB of raw rgb data, you'd need a full version of ERMapper to compress anything beyond that. Mind you, your GIS provider may use ERmapper anyhow.
