i just got lightwave 8 and for some reason when i'm just doing normal stuff eg zooming in and out and animating characters and stuff and the screen goes blank and has to reboot.

my spec is
AMD athlon 2500+
radeon 9800 se 128mb
60gb hardrive
1gb ram

i talked to some friends and they think my graphics card is overheating cuz its trying too hard to show good openGL.

could my graphics card be overheating?
or is it something else?

its possible, sure. might wanna open your case and see if the fan on it burnt out or maybe its just clogged with dust..

there's a bit of a history with using lightwave since 6 on ati
cards as well, could be you just need newer drivers (ISTR
reading they foxed a lot of issues recently and LW was running fine on em).

did LW7.5 run ok?

- Will.

The problem with ATI cards isn't with LW only.

There are several Poser, Vue and similar programs users at another forum I belong to.

Nearly all of them had problems with ATI cards causing system crashes, especially when used on an AMD powered system. In some cases a driver update either helped or cured the problem.

So I'd look in that diretion.

Adding a cooling fan - or a better one - to the graphics can't hurt (long as you set it up to pull heat away - blowing air onto the chip just drives the heat in deeper) and is inexpemsive.
