(still waiting for delivery on mine)

Sprouting from another thread where 3djab is having difficulties using high-poly trees in a scene.

Can anyone tell me if the new particle system with its per-particle control could be hacked into a solution for Instancing?

anyone tried this yet?

I'm betting you could copy objects to particle positions, but you'd still incur the full overhead of all of those objects (not true instancing, where only the original 'instanced' object is held in memory).

oh... I was under the impression that this already was 'true instancing' in relation to memory usage at least, just that the instances were uncontrollable

I think in terms of clones of objects, I believe there is SOME memory saving, even if they aren't fully instances.

You should be able to use the particle stuff to do some cloning too, as you asked for!
