Really enjoyed your reel. I'd have liked to have seen more animation of the Future City model to get a better look of the complete model, but what a great style. How much work has gone into it so far?

I also liked the future aircraft model as it assembled at the start of the reel...how did you achieve that?

Great to see more.

thnx yaīll..the first aircraft assemple is easy just moved the plates of the hull into diff layers then animated em....
i would also have liked an animation fo the city and the interrior room...but rendertime wasnīt on my side... and i had to send it all over to a bud for rendering...and even then it took an hour to render one frame, and i would have had to have atleast 400 frames for the anim...so you see :D thatīs 400 hours..hehe..gah i need a renderfarm..anyone got one to spare ? :D

Check http://www.respower.com/ it's self-service online renderfarm. I'd recommend checking it out on a personal project like this, becuase then you'll know how it works if you ever need it for a commercial job.

NICE! Just wondering if you tried to add motion to the layer behind the futuristic city? Did you use After Effects?

Wow, that's awesome modelling. Love the detail on the city although a camera fly-through would be a nice touch so we could see all the angles.

Excellent work.

I love when precision modeling is used to convey a sense of scale this size. Especially when the form(s) are a funky stylized architectural design. When I check it out I think of the designs in the original Dune movie. I really like the "tubing" and other various "nernies" you've done on the posted pictures. (I have'nt downed the frames as of yet.)

Your into modeling so do if you know it there is a new MacroForm plug-in for the new LW? (ver 6+)

Hello...

I don't mean to be a complete a$$hole, I just wanna give you some serious critique; If I sound a$$holish, its because I've been awake for 22 hours  ...

-- That music sucks. It might be okay in some scene in a movie where someones building a boat to escape from an island, but does NOT go with the reel at all. They should match up a little bit, but the video portion just ignored the beat of the audio portion...

-- You have really great modeling skills, you really do, but that reel isn't doing much for you. The part in the beginning where that aircraft is spinning around... I coulda took the dog on a walk and come back and it would still be spinning. My point?... It spins too long. If you worked with your reel more you could make that music be great with it but e.g. when the music first starts, the tone is like going up to something its like building up and yet all you have is the plane getting put together and spinning around -- for that part of the music you shouldn't start showing the models yet, because that is supposed to build up to some sort of a climax.

Nowadays we have all this good software and stuff like Adobe After Effects and Avid Express and other video editing programs, which can make really neat effects and output great results, yet in your reel im just seeing "blaaaaaaa"

One example of a reel that I've seen that has good effects and the audio and scenes blend nicely, is this one here: http://kennethwoodruff.com/graphics/movs/kennethwoodruff_reel_Q1_04.mov

When I saw that reel I didn't wanna go saying "good job" and stuff cuz that's not what I was thinking, I told you exactly what I thought and hopefully it will help you... hence "Say it like ya see it" and "It's your own mouth so use your own words"

I'm not saying I could do even half as good as what you did, but your reel could use a lot of work.

:)

Yes i agree that, that is a very nice reel...but let me ask you something...is that a model reel ?...ummmno...looks to me like itīs a fx/compositing reel....
Donīt get me wrong...i know what your trying to get at...but that real could never work as a modeling reel, first of all...each clip was way too short..would never been able to see anything of the models...unless u did a ton of clips of the same model..but that would still be annoying as hell to watch since you wouldnīt really get a grip on what the models look like.....second..

......this is the first time i used AE to do anything like this..never cut or edited anything in my entire life.. ;) what did u expect ? :D

I do however know exactly what u mean with everything on my reel...i donīt really like the music..i would have had something else if i found something...itīs spinning kinda slow in the beginning...i should have had more shots from diff angles(or animations) of the other models...and i could mentione a ton of other erros(that i think)..maybe youīre now wondering why i even released it...well...trial and error simply..get feedback and i have...a ton...and it was worth it..cuz now next time iīll do one...itīll be ALOT better...das is life..

I really appreciate you taking the time tho to crit on it real seriously. not many do... :D

------------

glassefx: iīve never used any MacroForm plug-in so iīm sorry, i donīt know..

polys...hmmmm, dunno...lemmi check :D
ok it seams that there are around 263k polys...hehe..

The city model took like maybe 5 days to make....and itīs not finished yet....the first plane i worked on for 2 months on and off..
the last plane took a week to make..

I must be the only person reading this post on a Mac. I just can’t link to the movies. What is RARE? Why is everyone staring at me?

Swirly-Chicken
05-13-2004, 07:16 AM
rar is a compression tool..or rather WinRAR...itīs like WinZip but better....in my opinion...anyways...

...the main server that had the uncompressed files is down for a lil while...not sure how long...but shouldnīt be too long...thereīs been like over 8000 downloads of the reel in total from the 3 servers..and the main one had like 8 gigs downloaded and the guy that owns the server(a friend of mine) was starting to get worried that his ISP would wigg out...again..cuz of the usage..so he told me heīd close it for a lil while to let it cool down...

Iīll ask one of the guys that host the mirrors when either gets online, if one of em can host an unrared file for you mac/linux users :)

I had to find out what .Rar was too using Google. It's like a .zip file thats compressed the .avi. You need to download the .Rar software (free for a period) and uncompress it...then play the .avi

hmm,

in contrary to opinions posted earlier, I DO like the music. It's from the 5th element right? I think this type of music compliments your modelling, which makes an impression of a far high tech future. In that sense your music choice couldnt be better.

Furthermore I think your modelling is absolutely awsome.

keep it up

Was wondering, what kind of lighting was used in the screenshots? Light array, radiosity, gMil?
