This is just an idea for a script. Im just wondering is it possible to create a volumetric light with a shape ( Light rays ) other then a cyclinder shape ( distant lights ) / cone ( Spot lights. ie a square or a retangle.

Well, theoretically, offcourse, yes, hence the name volumetric, if you manage to write a procedural that does just that...

Or even simpler than that:

Create an Image (512x512 will do), make it black, then inside that black image make a white square, so it looks like a white square with a big fat black border:

Create Light, make volumetric
When in Volumtric Option for Light create a texture Layer, apply the image you just made image, set Blending Mode to Multiply and set Texture Axis to X.
Duplicate this layer, and on the duplicate set the Texture Axis to Y.
Duplicate again and set this Texture Axis to Z. (this layer isn't really necesary but it makes sure the cube is really a cube...just making sure ;) )

Now you have a Volumetric Light that emits a 'volumetric square'

Forgot to mention you have to set the Width and Height Tile to Edge or it won't work (you'll get repeating cubes all over the place)

Anyway, a lot is possible with volumetrics...
