Just curious - is Caligari one of the "30 other companies" that are not listed in this article:

that "are to co-operate in conjuring up a standard 3D graphics, called Universal 3D?" ???

http://www.3dif.org/ for more on the format...

I think this will be a nice idea. Mainly because myself (a LightWave user) could do group project with two of my friends (one uses 3D Studio Max and the other Animation:Master).

Since I have an interest in game programming, it would make it easier in converting 3D models from these different applications to the best format for the game.

Of course, I bet this will come at a price. There will be small differences in how the different packages work which means there will probably be some comprimise in what you can "port" from program to program. For example, I suspect it wouldn't support Saslite fur particles!

I would also presume that it would come as a plugin for the applications because I'm sure NetTek don't want to move away from their file standard, as would any competitor. Otherwise, all the user would get is a different front-end to the same thing (plus a renderer of course).
