It is one thing to collectivly wait for something, but if some ppl get it now and some (europe) have to wait for it....

Nah.. I'll give it this week before I really start bitching.. As we need a dongle to run it anyways, why not post it somewhere where I can download it ;) (just kidding.. Don't ban me Chuck)

Those that got LW 8 already, can you do a few rendering tests for all of us waiting? We didn't see examples of the new renderer enhancements in the LW 8 feature list, so I am eager to see speed and quality changes. Can any of you LW 8 guys load a complex scene in LW 7.5, render, and do the same in LW 8, and post the images and render times for us to compare?
I'd especially love any outdoor architectural shots, but I won't be too picky..

I've run a simple render comparison, 7.5 vs 8 vs FPrime, on a scene I put together to play with radiosity in FPrime. The soccer ball was made by following Larry's excellent "10 minute soccer ball" method.

Total scene polys: 11246
Lights: 1 high-power area, 2 spot fill
Radiosity: MC, 2-bounce
Resolution: 640x480, no aa, no shading NR

Results:
LW7: 23m 50s
LW8: 20m 34s
FPrime: Stopped at 28 passes, 20m 34s (matching 8's time)

There is a difference in rendering between 7.5 and 8. The final pic is a Photoshop difference overlay, with 5x levels expansion, showing an exagerated view of the differences.

LW 7.5:
http://www.dvdprofiler.com/kcole/LWTest7.jpg
LW 8.0:
http://www.dvdprofiler.com/kcole/LWTest8.jpg
FPrime:
http://www.dvdprofiler.com/kcole/LWTestFP.jpg
LW 7.5 - LW 8.0 difference:
http://www.dvdprofiler.com/kcole/LWTest78.jpg

Architook
04-19-2004, 09:54 PM
Hmm, rendering of 8.0 looks the same as 7.5, just a different dither pattern. Still, from this one example, it looks like there's a 10% speed boost to LW 8. What about new render features?

The fprime comparison is interesting too. It has antialiased edges, the Lightwave renders don't.

10% speed is good, lets hope other scenes have even more speedup!

NanoGator
04-19-2004, 10:23 PM
I wonderr if 8 is doing fewer samples or something like that. I mention it because when 6 came out, people complained that it rendered slower than 5.5. Turns out, a default setting on how many rays were calculated per frame was changed in 6. (Well i may have the details a bit fuzzy, but you get the idea..)

Architook
04-19-2004, 10:47 PM
Oh, Nano, I see what you're saying, 8 may have its sampling tweaked. You can't tell from the radiosity image because radiosity isn't easy to compare by eye. But it would be easy to tell if you use a non-radiosity scene of simple geometry and no adaptive antialiasing.

Still, I think that first test is some evidence that Newtek did indeed change the renderer, that's great!

And kcole, we all thank you for being the first to give us something to look at! Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken and I may indeed be, there will be a
difference between 8.0 and 8.0 sucessive renders as well.

Isn't it simply because LW always shots the rays at random (ie same reason animations using GI flicker)? In other words, you'd even get these differences rendering the same frame twice on the same computer using the same installment of LW.

Not said that they could still have changed some internal settings.

Did you note any difference in speed?

Hi, Howard!

There is a brief tutorial section in the help file, and a selection of Proton's LW[8] videos on the 3rd party CD; we'll be working on additional tutorials for the web site, and of course there are all the rest of Proton's videos already in place. Since we have in fact provided extensive material prior to this release to show how the new features operate, something we have not done previously, I hope you'll give some consideration to the notion that things are in fact a little different this time around. ;)

The reference manual is still being worked on, and when complete there will be a pdf version available to registered owners. The Tutorial manual is also still in preparation. Once we have these completed and printed, we'll be ready for the official launch of LightWave [8].

Well, i for one took the Proton videos as *demos*, not as tutorials per se.
I guess the new tools would require a bit more effort from the tutorial and manual department, no ?
Also, I read in the Expression Builder of 7.5c that next revisions of that tool would be expanded and (IIRC) have more preset utilitiy functions and stuff, did that happen with 8 ?

great to see that lw8 finally made it onto the 3d stage after waiting it the wings for quite a few months.

looking forward to installing it and getting all those lw 8 books as well!

cheers to the dev team and all the staff at newtek for their VERY long hard work over the last 2 years and with putting up with your loyal and somtimes grumpy fans...i say fans rather than users as i've never met/talked to such a devoted bunch of 3d artists as lightwave artists...they're almost as devoted as MAC users!

...to those at newtek..all the staff..even the cleaners..well done and have a drink to celebrate the latest revision of your flagship 3d program....

i'm very dissappointed that Lightwave is still same renderengine as 7.5c.

Are there GI receive/send options per object/surface now?
This is a absolute MUST. Otherwise its same old GI all over again.

improvement? I mean VT3 has unlimited undo's. So why cant they implant it in Lightwave. Not having unlimited undo's was OK in the 90's. But we are in 2004.

For God sake newtek wake up. ( if its only on move/rotate/scale ofcourse)

Not that I've found. You can still control sending by duplicating objects, hiding from camera and bumping diffuse, of course.

Just a couple of questions on the LW8 'About' screen.

Is Josh Darling the same Josh Darling from Daz3D fame?, no complaints, he's a decent bloke. The second question is...

What is 'IntelligEntities'

Now I appreciate how daft I'm going to look if this was part of LW since v5.6. I can guess what it would be, I've just haven't came across the term in LW before.

I think that's the 'revolutionary' technology that allows Modeler to pass attributes to Layout. Seems like you would want to copyright that sort of technology, as there isn't another 3d platform on the market that would want or care to emulate that functionality. Along those lines, what exactly came of P.A.V.L.O.V. ?

IntelligEntities are the ability to add the morphs and stuff into
into a single object file instead of having to do it the old
way, with seperate objects.

i Think in the 6 manual they are actually called that...

- Will.

kfiram
04-21-2004, 06:20 AM
If I remember correctly, IntelligEntities were also responsible for object layers and their hierarchy. It was indeed considered a new "Entity" - and an "Intelligent" one (due to hierarchy and the uber-cool new EndoMorphs).
If Newtek followed their own lingo, I guess Luxigons and Powergons would have also fallen into that same category.

A pitty they don't seem to stick by their trademarked inventions...

Very likely as Daz's Edge Bevel plug-in was one of the free plug-ins bought in to bolster LW8's "new" feature list.

"In Japan and Europe, the Middle East and Africa, NewTek Europe has started shipping LightWave 3D [8] updates today, the 21st April 2004. Because of the sheer quantity of people upgrading to LightWave 3D [8] we anticipate that deliveries will be ongoing for a few weeks as the progressive shipment of upgrades to our customers takes place. In one of the many threads about LW 8 Chuck mentioned that the first batch went out but there where issues so cds where NOT going out every day but will gear up to daily shipments as they get all their ducks in a line so to speak.

I talked to customer service and they told me that they will get cds out over the next two weeks, so before may. That was a conversation I had last week.

Then there is a post about some files for an example or tut on the cds that got left off the cds and that can be downloaded.

Sounds like the usual murphys law of mail rooms and production. I waited a year for this so I can wait another week.... I am also waiting for zbrush 2 cds to go out.

This is turning out to be the longest two week of my life...

I meant tutorial files not program files. minor content stuff from what was posted in the forum. I don't think it has to do with crashes.

LW 8 does use more open GL features so that may also be the cause of issues. Until I get it I couldn't guess.

No LW8 here either... either I didn't really get included on the first wave, or the mailman is on strike, or those people who said they got their's are lying! It's all a conspiracy...

And that it will take time.
They are sending out thousands of copies and just a very small percentage of the recipients is actually active in these discussion boards here, so I guess that more than 5 have received their 8...

Why are you all being so hard on Newtek? You know they only have ONE original 1 speed CD burner. So just chill.... It will come...... eventually..... maybe tomorrow...... maybe next week.....

I'm starting to think Godot will arrive before LW8 does :).

Well then it is time to upgrade to the times of Mass Production. Or sign with a distribution company to Mass Produce, package and distribut for them. Like for instance Microsoft has a really good distrubiting experience [this just an example of course, they could choose SL OW Fullfillment House for the distributing].

Or don't you mean Longhorn [the next version of Windows].

I'm sure there's a budget for the distribution. Per customer it can't be much to burn CDs and ship them but with the development costs and this being a "free" upgrade I'm sure they're not gonna spend loads and loads.

Anyway, before 8 comes and you soon wipe 7.5 from your hard drive, just enjoy the time with 7.5 and think over the happy times you've had with it. You'll find the time will pass quickly and when 8 finally does come you'll have a tear or two in your eye thinking that you won't be spending as much time with 7.5 from now on. You may even have second thoughts about using 8!:p

I've been spending my time with UT2k4. Onslaught is too fun, think Halo like vehicles driving and objective type gameplay with 32 players.

Can not wait to get home from boring work to play more.

It would be nice to know if, when, the fullfilment house shipped the last load of CDs. And how many.

On the plus side I am getting to know my mail carrier.

I got it last Monday. Hope you all get yours soon.

Hey js33, do you dare to say when you ordered the package which made you qualify for the 8 upgrade? Just trying to see if there is any sort of order they are sending in or just closing their eyes and sticking their finger down on a list of names.

While I DO think Unreal 2k4 is a good game. I don't think the vehicles drive as well as HALO - especially the buggys and trucks in UNREAL2k4. All the ground vehicles drive the same - just different speed - but they all feel like you are driving a tractor - compared to the SEXY feel you get from HALO's Warthog!

I ordered 8 on 7/13/2003 from DMG Publishing (Keyframe Magazine).

No. Actually I didn't register the new 7.5 serial until about March sometime. But I did call customer service when I didn't get the UVedit Pro email that everyone was getting. Then I got the UVedit pro email a few days later.

Wow, so really NT didn't know you had "preordered 8" until around March then ???

Would this indicate that they aren't doing it in order of purchase then?

Is the target still end of this month?

No they probably knew I upgraded in July of 2003 because I got DFX and 7.5 then. They just didn't have my new serial registered until March.

Okay, here's the news - the fulfillment house got all the production done last week and was able to begin packing and shipping - they informed us this afternoon that they should have the majority of the upgrades packed and mailed today and the rest will be packed and mailed tomorrow.

What about all the poor shmucks, like me, who ordered the LightWave 3d 7.5 upgrade+dfx bundle from Safe Harbor last November? From what I've read, I'm not even registered at Newtek to receive the upgrade, yet I've paid for it. Newtek has my updated email info, they know how to reach me, but not any conformation as to the update. That said, I havent even received UV edit pro. I have the sales receipt ready to provide proof of purchase, yet no way(as of now) to get Newtek to confirm I have a copy of the upgrade coming to me. There must be alot more like me who ordered from a 3rd party retailer that are in the same boat. I'm happy I have the DFX bundle(although I do most of my work for print). I just would like a little consideration about getting registered for my upgrade.
