Well all my colleagues have now overtaken me in the speed stakes so I'm looking to either upgrade my Dual 800Mhz PPC7450 or buy a tastey new PPC970 if I can afford it at the time ;) .

Looks like Mac is going with the intell chips now, saw some headline about it the other day.

How many apps will utilise 64bit technology?? What sort of things will you be able to do with it?

For goodness sack people. Apple hasn't announced this folks so therefore it is a rumour and speculation. Based I believe on the fact that Pixar, which Steve Jobs has close ties with, has recently switched it systems to x86 but thats hardly any indication that Apple is suddenly going to switch to Intel in its consumer market.

The PPC970, assuming it can be sold at the same price as the current Power Mac systems, will be a much better CPU with which to develop. Applications will need to be re written to take advantage of the new 64bit stages in a CPU but this will be the same for x86 to. 64bit also allows systems to use more than 4GB of physical RAM, the current maximum fir 32bit architectures.

Why switch to intel when 64bit is around the corner? The intel 64bit option is much more exspensive to if i remember correctly.

Riki, don't believe anything you read in PC Magazine. That article (claiming Apple was going Intel) was completely misinformed.

Apple will announce its 64-bit (IBM) strategy in May. Sample IBM970 motherboards are doing the rounds. I'd predict the new machines will be ready mid-year for MacWorld.

Yeah Yeah Yeah I know the deal :-)

I seem to remember last year about this time, people taking about the imminent release of the G5 at MacWorld in Tokyo, but instead we got a suppository with a TV screen :-)

I thought the next big thing was the new I-Pong after shave from Apple. Unless this is a an early April fools joke by MacFormat. If it isnt a joke I will pass anyway.

Now I find it funny that this thread has been wieved 192 times (as I writing this) and only 19 people have voted. How hard is it to choose a option and press vote? Parhaps this thread is not that interesting but this seems to be the case with most other polls too. Just an observation.;)

People clearly prefere reading gossip and rumours ;)

I voted :) I'm for the $2000 - $3000
