Hello Everyone,

I woke up cause I couldnt sleep and an idea jumped into my head. I was thinking that it would be really interesting to see everyones fist render in Inspire or Lightwave or whatever it may be in.

I have been dabbling in Lightwave now for about 2 years and some days I feel like I havnt learned much and other days i feel like I am doing ok. But, whenever I look at the first things I made it makes me feel like I am on the right path, although it seems like a slow one!!

So here it is my first render and it was done in Inspire 3d.

Man all of my first-first stuff is lost on some amiga in the closet at work :) sometimes I wish I had some of my really old stuff to look at. but in the spirit of.. well... something, I slapped together a recreation of what my true first render looked like.

it's probably about 80% accurate and most of the changes would have been minor cosmetic modeling ones:p

<edit> arrrg! what's this only 500x500 max? what's wrong w/ 640x480:mad:

Sadly i lost all of my early work when i hit the wrong button during an installation of linux and wiped all 3 of my hard drives lol. I think my first real render was of an X-Wing id made, it took me about a day to make and it was very very bad, just using primatives. I was really proud of it though :) and it was a sad day when i lost it.

This is great seeing all of your work here. I have heard many times that everyone has to do a space scene sooner or later and it looks like that is what many of you did as one of your first projects. I saved it for my second! Here is a render of a probe I did for my first spcae scene.

Ok, this is not my oldest LW- render, in fact I dont have those old ones anymore.
It is very old though and the oldest of my renders, that I managed to find and that surveived my occasional: "I hate my old stuff and therefore I delete it now to get free HD- space"- moods.
It is from July 1997, or even older (the file- date is still from that time, but I think it might be even older).

That sure is a shame that you lost your very first works from a mishap like that.

I think you have an intersting image there. It reminds me of a future Paris or something. Maybe sometime after a war.

I am really enjoying seeing everyones very first renders, I think it is a great way to see how much progress we have all made. Keep them coming. This is my very first landscape, I think I made it after I built my table.

I was so pround of this image when I made it because I used bump maps and at the time I thought I did a great job on the sky and the water.

It was my second thing made. The date on the file is october.20.2000

Well, since we are sharing our firsts with lightwave, and I only have 1 post to my credit right now, and it's a brand new forum, here's mine. First model and render. I've been using LW for only a few months. Prior to that, my 3d experience was about a year trying every "off the shelf" 3d product available with little success until I got LW7. I am on my third model and hope to post soon:D .
PS. Lewis was my inspiration.

Hello

Well I can't remember the exact date, but it was some time 1987.
This was my really first image (well, this one is made in LW7.5) in a real 3d software.
As you can see, the Camera and Light is at default position.
Before this I programmed some funny circles and rotating cubes in early 1982...
If I can get the system up, I'll post images from the other system too.

You all can benefit from me being a packrat. These may actually be my first LW renders. These were done on an old Video Toaster so LW may have been at version 2 or 3 when I did these. The background on the tadpoles was painted in ToasterPaint :)

I can't say I ever thought these were incredibly cool or anything. But hey, it took 20 minutes to render this kind of stuff back then, and we had to set everything up in wireframe so you always had to rerender.

This really and truly is a first render. I installed LW last week and the next day my 7-year-old daughter was given an assignment to "do something interesting with the number 100", and she decided she wanted to make 100 robots in my new program.

She'd had some experience with wings3d, and she was able to make a simple robot there. I helped her import it into LW, cloned it 99 times, and showed her how to move them around.

She made the artistic choices of surface colors, background, etc.

Anyway, her first grade class clapped.

oh, what a rusty can of worms that has been opened.

my first render was done some time in the 80's on a yamaha msx computer (the first midi sequencer one) and was of a cube bouncing around a box using squash and stretch, i'm sure i must have saved it on a cassette.

i've been looking for some of my early atari and mac seII stuff but for some reason i saved them on things called floppy discs and computers don't have slots small enough these days.

here is something that i did on a powermac 8100 using infini-d version 3.5 i think.
i have had trouble reading those old files as i used something called disc doubler to back them up. is there anything that can recover them in osx?

This thread is a great idea.

My first render was a ball with my name on it in 3dstudios max at college in 99. Shortly after we were introduced to Lightwave and I havent stopped since. My first lightwave render was a gun that was made out of cubes, balls, and cones in LW5.6. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. I dont have any of the original stuff anymore though. The oldest render I do have though is also from college. Its a high poly version of donwtown moncton,NB witha low poly counterpart used for a VRML world. Wow, skytracer....ewwww super reflections.....

My first image,
Done in Povray, Moray 2.0 used for modelling if I recall.
Since lost all my POV stuff when a CD corrupted :( - I was depressed over that, I'd put a lot of effort into some of my work.

Ahh well, nothing lasts...

(Yeah..I know, why copyright such a bad image ;) - Gotto love Povrays' Media volumetrics though)

Found some old disk, renders from LW3.5, but I don't have a machine (Amiga) that will read those disk anymore. I'm sure they are much better in my memory anyway.

Thought you enjoy this however, turorial from 3.5 days, enjoy, you might even pick up a tip or two.

How'dee all...

Well these will be the first pics that I've posted on any forum... but I thought the topic was cool. {I've got my fingers cross that I'm even attaching them the right way...}

The following pic is of my desk. I originally purchased it back in 96' if I'm not mistaken. While I was putting it together I got this idea to use the directions/manual as reference along with actual measurements which I could do on the fly and make all the individual panels an parts ect., and then put it together like a 3d model on my brand new state of the art 3D software... "Raydream Studio"... heh heh

This next image was done about 5 years later with "3D Studio Max 2.5". I was trying for some level of realizm...

I just resently purchased Lightwave 7.5 but at present I've been caught up in the middle of an addition to my house so things are going slow as *****...

Hello Toxic 3d,

Are you trying to upload the files to newtek or link them to your webspace?

If uploading then to newtek, the file size has to be under 5242880 bytes and I believe that you have to upload each file in a separate post.

If linking to your webspace make sure that you are using the img tag and the full url to the location of your files.

Hope this helps.

Heehee, this is a great thread. We can all show off how bad we used to be. ;)

Some of the first 3d stuff I messed around with was on my 386 system with 4 megs of RAM. I was using POV-ray (the original DOS version). Here's a snippet from an animation I made:

The animation was short, just about 4-5 seconds, but I remember it took a while to render.

I was digging through some old stuff in a vain attempt to clean up my place this weekend.
Look what I found next to my old Kiss Destroyer 8 track.... my absolute first render.

It was "procedurally rendered" on Dec. 8, 1976 for my grade 11 computer course. The code is in ICL, an IBM training language and submitted on punch cards.
Now I don't want to hear any of you young folks complaining that your dual processor, 2 Gig Ram workstation is too slow....
There was a 1 week turnaournd because the card deck had to be shipped and run at a local university. That works out to a total rendering speed of 1.5 "pixels" per hour. And that's without the antialiasing turned on! :)

select face, press q, set surface settings (I'm guessing you know that bit). Open the surface settings window, and click the 'T' next to the colour settings. Load an image from the drop-down menu and mess around with the settings until you get what you want.

Dof, a bit of phototshop blur on the background buildings. Everything is lightwave, the buildings is the background are just oulines, basic shapes. The main building, is actually rather detailed. I sperilized the scene. I couldn't get the lighting right, i wanted reflections on some of the windows, but it was difficuly with such a dark night time scene. So, all the work on the building with the billboards
and it looks so basic, oh well, it looks good i guess . . . .

Any suggestions or critiq?

Been loving this post...

This is one of my earliest "saved" renderings. I'll bet all of our first renderings were more like sticking a primitive in a scene and finding where the render button was. ;)

This was done with the first program I did any 3D work with, Strata Studio Pro.

I really don't have my first Lightwave render since I didn't use the lightwave program for a long time. I only used modeler to create models I could not do in Strata. Then I would import them into Strata to render and animate them since I was a lot more comfortable with Strata than Lightwave. After a while I realized I was being a moron, and ditched Strata and began learning the Lightwave system.

I don't have my *first* render any more-- that would have been on my Amiga 500 in about '87 or '88. I used a program called Imagine (it was called something different originally, but I can't remember what it was any more) I built my living room, and it took 5 days to render-- straight ray-tracing! I wasn't into BBS's (and that WAY pre-dated the public internet) back then, so I don't have any copies of my old files.

This is a model of my old dorm room; I rendered this with Lightwave (5.0 I think?) back in '94 or so on my 25Mhz Amiga 4000. I honestly don't remember how long it took; I think right around 2 days.

The second image is an update to the same scene.

My very first render was most likely with Rayshade on my brand new Amiga 500 sometime around 1991-2, and was very much in the chrome sphere genre (though I was at one point attempting to build a futurustic motorcycle model by using graph paper to work out the vertices). No longer have any of that stuff.

My very first lightwave model/render was an extruded letter J, mainly just an experiment to learn the interface.

My second was a B5 work pod built from the old tutorial by Foundation Imaging's Mojo, "The 3 D's of 3D".

My first original model (and thus render) was either the Proximan K13 Shark interceptor (included below, since it's the most likely), or the Avery-Frost Orion (http://www.niflheim.net/art/index.php?RollID=gallery-tta&FrameID=19951229-orion), both taken from Space 2000 to 2100 AD, the first of the old Terran Trade Authority books by Stewart Cowley (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=stewart+cowley&ht=1&sosortproperty=1&from=R10&BasicSearch=) (basically, a bunch of sci-fi paintings by guys like Angus McKie, Peter Elson, etc. stuck together into a book, around which a story was created to link them together into a coherent setting). They are both circa 1995 on the Amiga. The precise dates were lost when the files were tranferred to the PC some time in 1996, but these are the oldest renders I still have.

In 1998 I did revised models of both the Shark (http://www.niflheim.net/art/index.php?RollID=gallery-tta&FrameID=19980519-k13shark-02) and Orion (http://www.niflheim.net/art/index.php?RollID=gallery-tta&FrameID=19980216-orion-01), though the latter was more intended to be a newer design than a straight rebuild of the one in the book and my original render.

Back in ~1992 I had a class at PSU in computer animation. We used Imagine 3.5 on Amiga 500s (i think) my actual first render was a black square (imagine users will likely remember that the program didnt add lights automatically...if you didnt know this like me... well anyway those formative immages are lost to time (and amiga formatted disks)

the oldest immage I have on disk was made in Maya 3 back in 2001. Oh, and no its not a watermellon fish, its actually supposed to be a large mouth bass. needless to say I had alot of learning to do with texturing.

For those interested... I posted the newest version of the fish under works in progress.

I have had Lightwave less than 1 week and it is the most fantastic software I've ever used. ( although I need to learn how to better manage render time vs DVD quality AVI's)

I mainly do DVD authoring now but have been involved in Printing for over 25 Years and Desktop Publishing since 1988 in California and have used 100's of Graphic and intuitive software packages over the years on Mac and PC . I've also written my own software games.

Lightwave RULES OK!

( can anyone tell me a better solution than Sky Dome Lighting , the render times are horrendous ??? )

cheers

Let's be honest guys, this would have been along the lines of everyone's FIRST render: :)

Mine was just a primitive sphere and I hit render. I'm amazed at some of the renders many of you have had. If some of those were your first renders, I can only imagine where you guys are at now.

Peace :D

Wow, this is a great thread and ideal to compare to the "Your best rendering" thread.

I have a long history of marginal computer art but I'll stick with the 3D... In cronological order we have my first renders in AutoCAD 12 , Alias Sketch (I don't know the version), 3D Studio 2.0, 3D Studio MAX 3.0, and Light Wave 7. Enjoy:D

AutoCAD 12 (http://dxyner2000.com/wip/ac12.jpg)
Alias Sketch (http://dxyner2000.com/wip/alias.jpg)
3D Studio (before it was MAX) (http://dxyner2000.com/wip/3ds.jpg)
3D Studio MAX 3.0 (http://dxyner2000.com/wip/max3.jpg)
and finally....Light Wave 7.0 (http://dxyner2000.com/wip/lw7.jpg)

Now I'm going over to post the good stuff in the best rendering thread.

Dang! My first render is long gone. It was made with Caligari's TrueSpace, waaaaay back. I got an educational version of it as an early teen in a book called "So You Want to be a Computer Animator." I don't even remember what it was. At any rate, I promptly spent all my money on Ray Dream Studio and set to work with my plastic models as references. The earliest image I have is probably my fifth render of my first kept model, an X-wing. Note the terrible lack of textures and the hilarious warp around the cockpit! I think I hand-pixelled that background too. Still, I was quite proud of the model. I had some better renders of it, but sadly they were lost during the fight over computers during my parents' divorce. Sad! They were fun, too!

These were my first renders, using LW6. My next render was a drastic improvement, but I lost all the files, for some reason. Oh well.

HEH-HEH Ya got that right! Where's all the chrome and checkered planes?
Man, I think I've got some POV images circa 1995 somewhere...

Hey Empororchuck, good to see a fellow Utahn on here! Well my first render is back home stuffed in a closet somewhere, but it is still perfectly engrained in my mind, I was so proud of my creation at the time. So I dug around in my start menu, found Bryce, and recreated it in about 10 seconds. Any old Bryce users will recognize this.

HAHA, Just when you thought this thread was DEAD, I gotta go and accidentally dig it up.

I'm allowed to do that!

I even found my old webpage with all my very 1st 3D works...anyone here or Anim8or before (free, greatest thing for beginners...anim8or.com).

I was SOOO excited when I made that Mech last year (2004). Then I blew my own mind after the apache...I was hooked on 3D...and LW came to me just before that summer.
I started doing tutorials. It was so forgien to me I was modeling in LW and rendering in anim8or.

Ghod, I can't remember! Imagine the worst possible bit of circa-1992/3 bit of poo you can imagine, then render it on a half-meg A500... *wince*

..was done in sculpt 3D on an Amiga 1000, it was about 120 x 120 and took about 4 hours to render a chrome ball on a checkerboard plane and it hooked me forever.

Shortly after I started doing limited animation in Videoscape 3D.

Who can tell me what the evolution of Videoscape 3D? (you'll date yourself for sure)

I don't have an awful lot left from the first time I dabbled with 3D, unfortunately. It was probably in 1998 or something such... In maybe 2000 or 2001, I played around a lot with the nice but somewhat odd PiXELS3D, and did a lot of completely abstract images. Most were just rendered procedural textures. Pixels had, and still has (it's even better now, obviously) the best procedural texturer. Nothing, not even Lightwave or Maya or other high-end 3D apps come even close. But it's rather crummy when it comes to everything else, so... yeah. Anyway:

Those are from 2000... Also done in Pixels 3D. I was working on a tree and some more stuff, but I never finished it.

This image is an attempted reconstruction of my first render. The original was done circa 1996 in a little program called Visual Reality 2.0. The original file is probably still in my Pentium 133 machine in the basement, but I'm too lazy to reconnect all the components I cannibalized from that sucker.

I was amazed to discover that I still HAD this software after all these years, and was even more amazed when the program still ran. The reconstruction was done circa 1:15am tonight in Visual Reality 2.0.

If I'm not mistaken, the couch was peach-colored originally.

I have some circa-1997 Lightwave 2.0/Amiga stuff laying around here somewhere, though it's probably mastered on VHS. Though I might have a 3/4" Umatic copy somewhere.... :)

Oh, you must have learned faster than me. That was my second render. My first one was the cow with a wood texture on wood ground.

you guys might remember this. I posted it back in october, I guess it was the 1st halfway (emphasis on halfway) render that I did. Hell, its still probably one of the only decent renders i've done. whatever. It was done on a 500mHZ pIII w/96mb of RAM (sad, ain't it? i've since upgraded to 2.8gHZ pIV w/ 512mb of RAM).

I just bought LW4, win95, the first pentium 60Mhz, 16 mb ram
One week after... my first "pro" work and simply my first 3D job (I was working for a medical agency):
A 30 polygons box, 2 maps. A basic exercise, with the manual open on my desk, he he, a productive learning... I've done a lot like this after!

http://img103.exs.cx/img103/1235/fongarex0bs.jpg

Packshot of drug-box project, it was composed with a nice blue sky for a director presentation.

At the same time, a more free style job, I was learning...
Note the LW4 CD on left, LW 4.0 PC interface, Photoshop 3.0 Mac interface, color pens from LW4 original CD, some scanned "roughs", the standard "crumple" bump of the desk. Firsts ray-trace tests (reflexion, transparency, shadows), alpha maps. It was simply magic. Render time: one night for 800x600 and some pray.... hi hi hi !
