I need to confirm if ver 7 or 7.5 can run on WinXP. Has anybody encountered any difficulties or problems running 7 or 7.5 on the XP platform? Thanks in advance for your time and words. George

George,

LightWave 7 and 7.5 will work on XP.

The one thing I will tell you in advance is that, depending on which version of LightWave you have on CD, you might want to download the newest hardware lock driver from the manufacturer's website, rather than using the one on the CD.

You can download the latest driver from here (ftp://anonftp.rainbow.com/support/SSD5411-32bit.exe).

Thanks Titus / Kurtis.

Kurtis, Can you explain what a hardware lock driver does? Why is it important?. Thanks.

The hardwear lock is basicly a hardwear key or dongle, the device plugs into a USB slot and has a four digit number contained with in, lightwave checks to see if theres one attached to your computer, and if there is not Lightwave will only run in demo mode. its really just extra sucerity against piracy.

I run 7.5 (and 7.0 before it) on both XP Pro and W2K boxes.

The only difference I've noticed is speed - XP Pro renders the benchmarks/raytrace.lws scene about 25% slower than W2K on my dual-boot setup.

You can tweak XP to improve it's speed a little but I haven't been able to match W2K's

By simply booting up and installing LW first on XP and then booting and installing on W2K.

XP can get to within maybe 5% as fast as W2K but there's just too much garbage built into it. I remember reading an article when it first came out that stated you'd need to add 512 mb ram and 500 kHz cpu speed to get performance equaling W2K.

Far as tweaking XP goes you can find a few tips here. (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/123)

There are several other sites as well that give performance tweaks. But heed the warnings about overdoing the tweaks.
