Tip 1.
Read the Manual, this is the most important tip.

Tip 2.
Do the examples in manual to get to know toolset.
They might seem mundane and too simple but knowing the toolset will get you thru any tutorial easier and with less hair pulling.

Tip 3.
Don't give up on the basics, keep at it.

Tip 4.
After you read and do examples in manual, your ready for day 2:) .

Tip 5.
check out tutorials on this site, (somewhere across those top buttons (forget which)).

Tip 6.
Do a search on these threads for specific problems (just about everything under the sun has been talked or explained about).

Tip 7.
Now that you have skipped the first 4 tips:D , go to WWW.Flay.com and click on the Tutorial button. Many Many tuts there.

Tip 8.
While at Flay, go to plug-in section and grab Merge Trigon X, DS Pivot Center, and any other Plug-in that you think is interesting.

Tip 9.
Start with easy tutorials.

And Tip 10.
Read the manual now, cuz I know ya skipped it before:D

Then get on the thread again, post pics of stuff ya did, ask questions (after doing search), HAVE FUN !!!

LW is easy once ya get the basic toolset, and
'you'll Have FUN FUN FUN, till your wife takes the computer away'
As sung to the Beach Boys 'FUN FUN FUN':D

Another tip.
get good digital camera and take it EVERYWHERE you go, cuz after awhile you'll start to look at things totally different.
You'll grab leaves and start modeling them in your head, you'll look at buildings and start thinking of ways you could have made it better, you'll watch clouds and figure out ways to make them out of HVs, and you'll be taking pics of EVERYTHING you see because you just KNOW that someday you'll need that texture, you'll JUST KNOW IT!! YOU"LL KNOW !! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You have just given up your life and everything sacred, meals will go by the wayside, dreams will be interupted by points forming shapes and coming after you, time will go by and after awhile you'll remember you haven't slept in days...:D

Yea, mine does too:mad:

If I could interject briefly. There is a nice book at: http://safari.oreilly.com which is for V7, but I think a lot of things still apply. Safari is a great service for a few bucks a month. Who would have thought they'd have any design books at all.. I know I was surprised.

Siiiiiggh.... So you got LightWave in the mail yesterday but you can't use the manual because you don't have Acrobat? So who shipped you LightWave? Because it doesn't sound like it was Newtek.

Is your copy legit?

Check my Tuts below, also a list of Lightwave books and videos available from Amazon.

He said he does have Acrobat.

Mine also comes up Blank with an error that says file being repaired but nothing but blank pages.
The file from the CD playes fine.

Matt: I just noticed *my* PDF manual is broken too....

...haven't looked at it for a while, cos the paper one is within easy reach - it must have gone tits up a couple of Acrobat-reader updates ago.

If you just upgraded, or have a CD only version, isn't there still an HTML version on your CD? or did I download that separately. I forget.

I just checked the version available for download here :-http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/downloads/updates/support/lw7x/lw7manual.pdf

and that one works fine for me - so get it now.

I don't know ubout the upgrade, but the full version of 7.5 comes with the printed manual. The PDF version on my CD didn't seam to work either. Best bet is to download the PDF from Newtek's website.

Check out http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm
for tutorials. Also watch the video tutorials on Newtek's website.

I can't remember if my pdf works or not, but I don't REMEMBER it being broken. You guys should make sure you are using the latest version of Acrobat Reader.

I think using the latest version on an old PDF *was* the problem, updating the pdf file fixed it for me.

I prefer the paper housebrick anyhoo.

I found when installing LW the pdf manual was corrupted. There is another location on the CD that you can copy the pdf from and it works fine. I think you can go to the D:\Online_Docs to get the good pdf. The CD also had Acrobat v5, I think. The better bet would be to download the html format help file, since there's a Tip section that's pretty good.

BTW: If you download tutorials that are web pages when saving it use the drop down box and save as a single file, MHT. This way you can be sure of getting the images imbedded into the file. That way if you want to copy it elsewhere it's all in one file.

I just started with LW about a month ago. I'm still having a hard time working my way around it but it's getting better. I started with the Visual Quick Start Guide to LW 7.5. It's sort of an intro to the manual and gives a very good overview. I'm now working on the manual and Inside Lightwave 7 by Dan Ablan.

I am surprised to hear that alot of you also had a screwed up manual...

and it's exactly what happens to me...it "repairs" then comes up with around 1000 blank pages!?

Im going to check out some of the links you have posted now...It's going to be hard to get a 20mb maunal home from the library, with only 16 floppies!

oh and, I got my copy of lightwave from NewTek...It had the big book, but I left it at my mothers friends house, and they are having some fight about something...:p

I have done some tutorials....but i really need to get the basics donw before i can tackle hard tuts...i have no clue how to even render anything...and, i hate to ask, VIPER???

Thanks norvman for the links, that helped me alot !

And LW 7 always installs the .pdf manuals corrupted - just copy the files from the cd.

And its good to see the new help me files (in .html) - theres an awesome MD tutorial there!
