how can i mirror the weightmaps of my character without deleting half of the character, mirroring the polygons, copying all the weight maps and clearing the weights on the appropriate side? I would do this but this messes up my uv map.

I'll usually create the weight maps with symmetry turned on...then copy the map, and clear the map from the appropriate side of the model for each map. I'm pretty sure there are plugs that'll let you mirror them, I just never felt the need to use them.

yeah, i really wish that i had done that, and if it comes down to it i will redo the weightmaps. But I really don't want to take all that time. I couldn't find any mac plugins that mirrored weightmaps and i could only find one that worked on pc. so if no one else has any suggestions looks like i'll be spending an hour or so redoing the dang maps. seems like a pretty obvious feature to have in lightwave and i didn't see it on the lightwave 8 feature list.
