View Full Version : saslite lighting seems reversed

I'm sure the pros are weary of saslite questions ("just buy Sasquatch, you pansy!"). Here's my issue anyway. I have a terribly basic scene with some grass. I'm using a spotlight with shadows (saslite set to accept shadows). This image shows the light behind the camera:

I would expect the first to be brighter and the second to have stronger shadow in the grass (apart from that cast by the cross). Instead I get just the opposite.

Any tips?

According to Worley Labs this is correct as hair, grass and other thin fibres are translucent - a light shining right at them will pass straight through illuminating the surface underneath whereas a light behind them will be filtered through illuminating the hairs/fibres whatever.

I'll admit it looks pretty odd though. The full version of Sasquatch has controls to change the way the fibres are lit but these are sadly lacking (along with a vast amount of other functionality) from Sas-Lite...

That makes sense for fur. It's too bad I can't control that option in LW. It seems possible, if inconvenient, to render the scene normally for shadows, then render only the grass with a light reversed and composite in Photoshop. Sounds like fun!
