Being new to Lightwave I'm unsure of the use of the Surface Baker.

What is the point in doing this? Is it better than or worse than using individual surface maps for the various attributes? Does it take up less memory/render time to use a baked map and does it retain all the same attributes that the use of individual maps would?

I'm a tad confused.
