Hi, I just had a small question about bones. Using the manual and tutorials, I have been able to make a little "lego man" with bones and a weightmap to only make it affect the geometry I want it to affect, however there is a small problem.


When I move the bones, the arm comes out looking all weird, I can't really explain, but here is a screenshot.

So as you can see, all I wanted was his arm to bend, but for some reason it comes out all weird.

Can anyone help, please?

Hmm, maybe you should try to explain your problem a bit better.
Does the screenshot show the problem?
If so, what is it supposed to look like?
Sorry, dont want to sound rude, but it is really hard to see, what your actual problem is.
Hmm, jsut shooting into the blue: Is there actually extra geometry where you want the arm to bend (if it is that what you mean).

I just want it to look like a regular arm bending, but instead, there is this thing you can see to the right of where the arm is bending, like a long thing going from the shoulder to the hand, see what I mean?

Ahh, ok hehe, that explains it.
Ok, I would make sure that your weightmaps are set correctly and that you did not leave out any points.
Personally I would not use weightmaps at all though.

BWT, you said you wouldn't use weightmaps right? What is their puropse, please? Because I only used one because when I didn't and I tried to rotate the bones I put in the arms, the entire body moved with them!

Yes weightmaps are made for this, but you should generally model your object in a pose that this cant happen (jesus- position). you can also limit the range of the bones without weightmaps.
I am not sure now, but I think that for a lego- figure the arms would not be connected to the body anyway. So you coulc put them into a separate layer and parent them to the body.
I am not sure now, as I have not used them in a long time, but I think that there is a weight- map- related setting in the bones - properites, that can cause points to shoot of in the opposite direction of movement, if the weightmap is not set correctly (I think it was weight- normalization). Maybe this is happening for you.
Just a few ideas to try.

Thanks, I've tried some other things, but unfourtunatly no luck. I really can't figure out what it is. I mean, his arm bends fine, but when I look at it in wireframe you can tell something is wacked out...I'll have to get a screenshot...

you really have to put up a better screenshot! i have no idea what the heck i'm supposed to be looking at! where is the problem area you are talking about.

also,

read the manual.

it seems like you have a very FUNDAMENTAL misunderstanding of what bones do. going through the manual really will help with the basics.

after that, come back and maybe you can state the problem more clearly after having read the docs.
