View Full Version : importing 3ds files

I have purchased a model in the 3ds format with the hope of being able to import the model into lightwave. I have also downloaded the 3D studio Max demo version hopeing it would have an option to export. So far no luck.

After some research I found in the LW manual that it has an option to import 3ds but it is not available as far as I can see with the application I have installed (LW7.5). Is this a separate plugin I have to download? I currently am using the version for apple, not sure if this has anything to do with it since the 3D studio max is PC only.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks for your time.

In the Load Object dialog you need to set "Files of Type" to "All Files", then the .3ds files will be visible. You can edit your config files to open .3ds without having to do that.

if that dont work (which it should) download the milkshape demo and use that to load the 3ds model and export to lwo file.

First you need to load the Conv3D.p plug-in, this is the part of the program in charge to import 3DS, DXF, OBJ and FACT files.

The plugin should be loaded by default unless your configuration got messed up.

In LWM3.CFG if you change the line-

FileType Objects *.lwo


FileType Objects *.lwo;*.obj;*.3ds

you'll be able to load .3ds and .obj by default.
