Hi -

I'm currently at a host that charges $9 for 50 megs... lots of features (forum creation, easy passwords... basically a big control panel) but there has been increasingly frequent downtime.

Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations!

Any help appreciated,
Andrew

One of my sites (http://www.deathfall.com) is hosted here, the traffic load is high and never had problems since we changed several weeks ago:

http://ehost4you.com

They have this (http://ehost4you.com/hosting/step_one.php?gid=2) plan for $4.95.

Yeah Dreamhost is great

Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?suture)

Hosting starts at about US$9.95.

But even that is a feature pack plan.
You get a jabber chat server, 24 hr tech support, web based control panel, 500 MB disk storage, 25 GB monthly Bandwidth, 60 POP 3 email accounts, 15 Shell FTP accounts, Web based Email Access @ https//webmail.yourdomain.com your own discussions lists, mailing lists and database, 1 Free Domain name Registration, 15 Subdomains Hosted, 3 Domains fully hosted, unlimited domain forwarding, MySQL database, PHP4, Full Unix Shell, Full CGI, SSI, SSL Secure Server, Daily Access Stats, Banner Free Guestbook, Password protect Directories (.htaccess), RealAudio and Video (http stream), Quicktime Streaming Sever. Plus these guys are continually coming up with new features and enhancements.

There's a lot more stuff in the web admin panel, but anyway take a look.

These guys are highly rated too, I had to sign up a client recently that needed unlimited FTP User accounts http://www.byzhosting.com/

But whatever you do don't ever use a company called 'Feature Price' , it's just a front, they just take your money and don't give you anything.

has anyone had any experience with SherWeb (http://www.sherweb.net) ? Are they as good as they appear to be ? (excellent uptime / unlimited bandwidth, etc)
They used to be heavily advertised on and supported by CGchannel... I 'm looking for a good host myself, too, and I was wondering about this one.

I use http://www.cihost.com now which is decent but costs more than dreamhost for less features.

anyone know of these guys. at $3.95 a month it's hard to beat. with 5GB space and 20GB bandwidth it sounds too good to be true. they are a canadian company.

I use hostned. I find they have quick response time when a problem does arise. Also I have had very few problems in the past 2 or 3 years. It's worth lookin into.

i am really looking into geta website up and running but there are 2 things that it MUST!!!! support. One is it must support MySQL becuase i will be running phpBB which brings me to my next feature. It must have a large bandwidth support becuase i plan on have the furoms become big and i know the forum will use alot of bandwidth if the become big. Thank for the help.

You should try http://www.powweb.com then. Bandwidth - 5GB per day! MySQL/PHP free for the first program a one-off $10 fee for any additional with no limits on max number (it seems). 1000MB storage space, $7.99 per month with free domain registration.

I use BlueVirtual.com for some of my accounts. I like them and the are adding new features all the time. Best bang for the buck!!!

I use Rackspace.com for some of my other bigger accounts that need more power than bandwidth. If you know what you need these guys can do it.

If you go with either one of them tell them I sent you so I can get my kickback. :)

AVOID Interland and any of it's acquisitions (like CommuniTech)!!!!!!!

2 gigabits data storage
2,000 pop 3 e-mails
60 gigabit of data tranfer

that seem very good and all for 7.50 a month. that woiuld avg. 2 gigabits a day and i think that would be good to soppurt my forums.

Is there a rating system in place to let give someone an idea of how long a company has been around what kind of up time they have, quality of customer service......

Hostrocket seems to have the best UI of the bunch posted so far any others out there that someone might recommend.

Thanks Wade

A simple test which I've used in the past, which I think works well, is to do a Google Search.

First Try "myHost sucks"

Then Try "myHost rocks"

of course replacing 'myHost' with the appropriate name.

www.netmar.com

Cost 120 a year with Domain name.

I'd like to add yet another recommendation for Dreamhost. I've only recently moved my site there (nothing interesting to see at the moment, sorry), but I did lots of research, and the reviews for Dreamhost all consistently ranked them as "excellent". I've been quite happy with them in my (limited) dealings with them so far.

Side note: If you switch, that $10 a month will get you 500 meg worth of storage rather than $50. Or, if you want to pay a bit more, then $20 a month will get you 1600 meg. Plenty of room for those big 3D galleries. :D

On the higher end, we're pretty happy with EV1 (www.ev1.net) - a mid-range dedicated server with 0.7 TB transfer for $99/month.

I've been using powweb.com for my hosting. $7 a month for 1000MB of space and 5GB a DAY transfers. Great deal. Haven't had any problem with the servier. I use frontpage for building my site and I can easily update my site by fixing my pages in frontpage and it will automatically update. Well, I do have to click on update so it's not automatic but you get the drift.

Dreamhost have a special deal going at the moment. It's 20 bucks a month, I think you can host up to about 15 domains, so host your friends and get them to pay :) Plus they throw in Miva Merchant for free, which is normally worth around $700 if your interested in seting up a shopping card ecom site with real time credit card processing. You also need to have a Merchant Account but can set that up through your bank. A good deal for anyone wanting to sell plugins, 3d models, texture cd etc.

Also check out http://www.byzhosting.com/ which has unlimited FTP Users, if you're interested in setting up a working site where Clients can upload files to your server.

Whatever you do, don't go with a hosting plan that hasn't been well vetted. There's a lot of rouge dealers out there like 'Feature Price' who just take your money and don't give you anything.
