View Full Version : Pentium 4 Zeon Hyperthreading

I'm seriously considering a dell dual P4 Xeon system. One of the purchasing options is to turn on Hyperthreading. Does anyone know if Lightwave will benefit from this?

Yep, it does.
However, only during rendering (and not all parts of the rendering process benefit), and to a max of 15-20% speed increase (averaged over the whole render, probably less, depending on your scene).

How is hyperthreading enabled? Do some cpu's have it and some don't? Or is it something configured in the bios?

All Xeons (P4 based that is...) have it, and the new 3.06 GHz P4 has it.

You have to enable it in the Bios, and you need an OS that supports it (W2K can work, but is a poor choice, XP is much better).

So basically, if it's a "purchasing option" make sure they don't charge you for it. Do you agree, Lightwolf?

They won't charge you though, since it is a standard feature of the above mentioned processors.

Intel are basically using their on-chip assets a bit more cleverly, and you basically get the extra performance for free. (well, they promise that all the time, but in this case it's true :D ).
