I've been working on a golf course but I'm having trouble on the trees. I can make a few good looking trees close up, and I can make lots of trees far away, but I just can't seem to make lots of good looking trees close up and far away. The course is surrounded with trees and has trees on it and the pov changes from shot to shot so all the trees need to be good.
I was looking at HD Instance and thinking maybe that was a solution to the problem but I thought I would post here first and see if anyone has any feedback.

I think this is mainly for games, but you mightwant to take a look:

Those trees look pretty good, probably more than I need in fact. And since this isn't a paying job I was kind of hoping to get away with something for less than a $100. TIA

To answer my own question, yes HD Instance was perfect for the golf course trees, and also useful for populating a library with books. I found it on safe harbor for $139 which was pretty close to what I was expecting to spend.

Maybe too late, but thought I'd post these for you anyway. A lot cheaper than the last one I posted:

WOrks with Lightwave

And, a cheapy

Yeah, XFrog is definitely cool if for no other reason that putting practical application to the Golden Mean. But it still left me with the geometry problem, ie hundreds of trees with thousands of polys each, but thanks for your help.

Did you try the other link too? That one is a lot cheaper and the models you can make are low poly. The textures and models that come with it are nice and royalty free. Though I find the system a little hard to use.

Yes, but I thought the close up texture mapped leaves looked a bit funny, and I needed good close up texture.
