Has anyone see or used this real time converter?

Note that based on its specs, the highest bitrate for MPEG-2 appears to be 6000kb/s.

On the Prosumer Level, I would look at ADS Technologies Instant DVD 2.0.

On the pro level, I'm looking at the VITECH Multimedia Profiler MPEG2 Encoder.

Both do CBR and VBR 15mb/s encoding.
Instant DVD 2.0 has RCA jacks, the VITECH unit has YUV in and Y/C out.

Note that to stay within the DVD spec, you shouldn't have your video data rate going above 8mb/s. But for really high quality archives, the higher data rates can be useful. Just don't look to play them in a DVD player.

I'm thinking more like a dedicated capture/archive workstation, perhaps with removeable SATA drives, that can stream high-res MPEG2 (15mbs) output via the card....

I might have to build an Apple workstation with a Blackmagic Designs card for this particular archiving project that I'm working on, as all of their workstations are FCP-based G4's. So there, the idea would be to digitize everything as uncompressed Quicktime.

I'm still trying to figure out the workflow...redundant backup media, etc.
