View Full Version : GTOPO30 data?

Hi all,

I have got hold of some of the USGS GTOPO30 elevation data, and I'm trying to import this into Lightwave (on a PC). But I cannot for the life of me work out how to do this.

I have found various instructions, and am currently trying to convert the data using MicroDEM before importing it with DEMscape.p. But no joy - I just cannot open the DEM data, no matter what application I use.

Does anyone know of a tried and tested formula for taking downloaded GTOPO30 data files and getting their data into Lightwave?

It's been a long time since I worked with that data in lightwave.
Your best bet is to go to the http://www.3dnature.com
website and ask on that froum.

this page may also give you some general info.

Gtopo30 data covers an area the size of north america.
If you want to get closer you need to find 7.5 meter dems.

Send me an email

and I'll send you all the links I have on the subject.

I found this

"anon_DEMimport is plug-in for Modeler of LightWave 3D. It can import the DEM (Digital Elevation Model).
It has compatibility with 'GTOPO30' distributed from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) free of charge and with 'Numerical map 50m mesh, Japan' distributed from Japanese Geographical Survey Institute (GSI).
Features of anon_DEMimport

You can import from the DEM to LightWave directly.
You can select the importing range with the visual preview window.
You can apply the vertex colors according to an altitude automatically.
You can import in the optional number of the points. If inputting less in the number of the points than in the original data, it regenerates meshes automatically."

Hope that helps

Thanks Mike,

I'll check out the sites you mention.

In the meantime I managed to solve my overall problem (importing somehow to LW) - I had let WinZip do its "smart" tar handling, and ended up with corrupt DEM data files!!

Been a ling time since I used LW to visualise terrain data too, but the plugin mentioned works fine - just be prepared to create some weighty terrain meshes! ;)

If you need any information on World Construction Set, feel free to contact me privately at [email protected]
As the UK distributor of the product and the author of the most recent set of manuals, I should be able to give you some pointers. Suffice to say, Lightwave export/import is a feature of WCS, allowing interoperability between the two products.

WCS6 has just been reduced in price to $500, so now is the time to purchase if you had ever considered it but had felt $1000 was too much!

If you purchase WCS from me (N-Light Ltd) with Scene Express (the realtime export modules) during January, I will include a free copy of xFrog Lite. For VNS2 with SX purchases, I am including wither a copy of xFrog Full, or a copy of xFrog Lite plus any 1 plant pack.

If this offer is of interest to anyone on this forum feel free to contact me privately.
