Yeah, and hook up motor controls so you can actually drive it around.

A couple of renders I did some time ago, for an (probably permanent) unfinished project.

Only after you've mentioned it, too distracted by the render itself :) ... yep, Octane at large! At first I literally thought it was a photo ...

As a means for highlighting your subject, I love the lighting - in that shot, "nothing exists except the car."

But I am curious: for lighting, did you just throw down a ground plane and front project the background image (using "matte" for the material)? I'm only asking because the reflections seem to indicate at least a partially outdoors environment? ... I mean, maybe behind the camera the rest of the building is in a totally demolished state :D ...

But definitely a sweet "bleed" of ground color showing in the render.

Sure! It was supposed to be part II of another shortfilm I did nine years ago. The intention was to create more spectacular action sequences (better char chases, more explosions and a bit of scifi at the end), but for now the project is on hold indefinitely.

I started with native LW renderer (11.6) but moved to Octane. Those test renders were made on a GTX970 at about 10 mins per frame.

Very nice render!

The paint could probably do with a little roughness to add a little noise to the specular... compared to the car on the right, the spec is super smooth.

Did you use an HDRI for the lighting?

Interesting. I'm doing some experiments with the Intel Open Image Denoiser in native LW renderer. What kind of render times you get with those images (and with what HW)

Free 3D-model from Viz-people.
I'm way to lazy to build a whole car in 3D but it's real fun to play around with shading and light.

Lewis - your car work is amazing, second to none.

I have "SubD modelling envy." While I do use SubDs, they always seem to get a mind of their own and not do what I want - maybe I need to ask them more nicely :)

Thanks,

I enjoy doing subDs, back in old days of LW 7 once i even did Arch-Viz building in subDs just for fun :).

I used 4 GPUs (2*2080Ti and 2*1080Ti) and render times for 5K renders are from 20-30 minutes for still but i did overkill with number of samples, I could render half of those samples and it still would be very clean, i just didn't have any rush time to render it so i let it cook overnight and i didn't use any denoisers, pure bruteforce ;).

Thanks for that Lewis. I guess without having GPU rendering that would take about 32 years to render in native LW ;-) You should try the new Intel denoiser. Got some good results with that but only if you can crank up aa levels realy high...

This render took about 1h40m on my very old dual Xeon [email protected] machine (rendered with 31 threads as I want to be able to use my machine while its rendering) but with the denoiser it comes out pretty clean without much loss of detail.

The image is rendered with Brtue Force and no adaptive AA. AA camera sampling at 256

Octane has it's own de-nosier which is very very good (better than Nvidia one) but whatever you do with de-noising it always "removes" small details and for close shoots i was doing i'd notice the difference :). Unless you see image with and without de-nosing you can't tell much of a difference but since i have enough GPU power (i have 11 GPUs total in 3 machines) i always can crank up more samples than i need in good render times, so if i'm in rush i just boot up my 2 render slaves and octane picks up those machines in network and add to current rendering process (no need to restart rendering) so if i see it's gonna take too long i just hit power button to render slaves and 7 more GPUs slashes rendertime by 1.3x :).

Really!? I never knew you could add GPU power while rendering.... That's a good feature!

Yes, Octane Network render controller is easy to setup and great for use, it "sniffs" network for more GPU power all the time so you can "add" to current task as you boot more and more slaves :).

I was curious to see how close i could get to blenders 20 second per frame with particle effects,
glow effects, bloom effects, depth of field effects and blurred reflections.

LW got between 15 and 27sec per frame with 45 secs per frame at the particle pass at 1280 x 720
