hello all.
I just bought a new iMac 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7,
16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
os 10.14.3..apple says update available..
I want to upgrade to latest version of l.w...
I've been using lq9.6 on old Mac..anything I should know before I do..
should I update os first or just download new lw?

If it's brand new Mac, does not it have the latest MacOS already?

LW 2019 trial you can download and use for 30 days or so.

If you were using some old Mac 32 bit plugins, say goodbye to them. LW 2018+ are 64 bit exclusively.

It will only be up to date from when it was manufactured.
10.14.4 has just been released, but I wouldn’t worry too much, update as and when.

Your old 9.6 won’t work properly in OSX 10.14 (long story short, there are graphical glitches in the LW interface anything before LW2018 in 10.14).

If your unaware, the shading system is completely different in 2018+, so old scenes need to be redone to some extent.

I intend to keep old 9.6 l.w.on old Macs....and just buy and download l.w. upgrade to iMac ..

Be sure you understand that the learning curve between LW9.6 and LW2019 is quite large. The rendering engine has change entirely, there are entirely new Surfacing materials (although you can still use Standard material for some things), getting output rendering is quite a bit different, and it may be frustrating for you to try to get the "nice clean renders" that you got in V9.6.

Since you plan to keep V9.6 on the old Mac(s), you can always fall back to it if needed.

To come up to speed on the new Surface materials, rendering, lighting, Global Illumination, volumetrics, etc., there are quite a few extensive training series, for example the Rebel Hill tutorials:

and Tobian's:

Good luck, and have fun!

Download size of what... stuff on YT? Hard to say, as depends on your view settings I guess. I can tell you the size of the original source videos present in my YT playlist there linked is around 1GB, how YT encoding, etc alters this, couldnt say.

how large is the l.w. upgrade..?

roughly 2,5 GB for the programs and content (which apparantly does not include the content that came with older versions...)
