arnold looked pretty fast for cpu back then.

yep. i think these days Octane render and LightWave 2019 render fits nicely though. :)
and Kray.

NT should toss in some GPU support in LW2020, and then the new LW render engine should kick pretty good.

Octane is good but it has some annoying quirks too.

Kray to me is still vaporware, apart from one beta tester this thing been 'just around the corner" since at least 2014.

I wish thr native renderers both in LW and Modo would utilise the GPU

Funny how this topic came up now. I was going through old bookmarks and found Kray. I've forgotten I even have a Kray2 license..
I remember I was stoked for Kray3, and discovered now it was released just 6 ish months ago. I feel it's *ages* since I even tried that beta, would think it was out already.
What's new in Kray3 though? I couldn't find anything which covers the difference.

Octane is hands down the fastest alternative. If you don't do big things, there's hardly an alternative if you have fast turnarounds.

Not defending Octane, just curious, and wouldn't mind to be educated: what quirks 50one?

i think renderman would have been worth continuing. especially how you can dev for it without need of a commercial lic.

and due to “xpu”, pixar’s cpu gpu rendering tech in 2019 :(

if there was a choice, i’d prefer nt integrated renderman myself and skipped the lw renderer. that’s probably not a popular viewpoint i guess.

Don't get me wrong, it's fast.

However, I can complain about texturing system, some issues with transparent objects(via specular material), although the builds are almost released daily, there are always some weird bugs introduced, like renderer being stuck on certain material despite the changes. Also grqphic card drivers need some gamble, like I can't use any of the drivers released in 2019 so far, I'm on 417.xx from last year, but that is causing some quirks in other apps.

Some scaling issues too, like say you work on up to scale model - 10cm all is good and then you apply texture to an object that is 100m tall and you'll get weird artifacts which the "filter size" can fix but not much in the app is about real world values, like bump is from 0 to 100, would like mm

Another thing is the distance between object, if it's anything below .01mm, say you got an object and a label, the label object will get black.

And many others that just annoys me when I got tight deadline lol.
