Any new tips / tricks? Good plugins to use? Or just good old-fashioned remake it in modeler by hand? Just curious in case a job comes through for rebuilding a hard surface CAD model. Maybe splines /patches? I'm used to more organic stuff. Thanks for any tips in advance!

I heard Unreal engine doing this very good but not used this myself.

Freeze your original object, put it to background, and use Trace Splines tool from EasySpline (http://easyspline.trueart.eu).

Trace Spline tries to find the easy way to go through the mesh between points and makes spline between them.

Use Cross Splines tool to join two or more splines together, if they don't share a common point.

Once you have spline-cage, edit it, to remove unneeded control points, and refreeze again.

If you have a sample STP file, try the trial of Moi3D.
I use it. It does nice polyflow conversions (when using tri/quad/ngon setting) and spits out native LWO files to boot.
