View Full Version : Rectilinear HDRI environments in Lightwave?

So Ive always used Lightwave Image World in the backdrop tab to wrap a scene with a mirrored ball (light probe) HDRI image, sometimes its even just a standard sRGB image. This works great for reflections but the resolution and detail from a mirrored ball image isnt great to use as an actual backdrop.

Also... I see a lot of HDRI stock libraries seem to offer their 360 degree environments and HDRI images in the rectilinear format. This seems to give a lot more of the actual environment with less distortion and better detail.

Does anyone know if there is a way to use rectilinear environment maps in Lightwave instead of using Image World which seems to only support the "mirrored ball" format?

Also... image world doesnt actually want to be used with mirrorball images, it should be used with angular map format. These look similar to mirrorball (they're round) but actually arent, the image is "distributed" over the disc differently such that when wrapped to an environment, you get equal resolution in all directions with minimal distortion.

YES! Thank you so much for that... at first it wasnt working for me because I was applying the texture with planar projection (like a jackass). Then I read your message again and realised you had said "spherical".

After changingthe projection to spherical it works perfectly

Thats interesting... everytime I post a question on these forums I learn something new. Or I learn that what I thought I knew was innacurate. Is there a way to convert between these formats? And which format is the best, or most beneficial?

Ye olde HDRshop does it just fine, you may be able to find a copy (of the old discontinued and free/open V1) floating around online somewhere. As to which is better... angular map always had good stuff going for it in respect of not having any "resolution distortion" across the enviro, but frankly... unless you're making your own I'd venture that best means "most available", which these days is generally rectilinear, and Id also guess that such become most popular because of the confusion between mirrorball and angular map formats.

I absolutely have to share this awesome resource. Im sure many of the seasoned HDRI veterans will already know this site, but its a new find for me and its absolutely great. Free HDRI environments and the quality looks really good from what I can tell.
