Intel 28 core cpu aside, the bit that caught my eye:-

At this point it's less about how fast you want your PC to go, and more about how fast do you want to spend thousands of dollars.
Wouldn't the AMD 32 core be better (and $1200 cheaper) ? Also, daydreaming now, but would a farm with ten of these, either Intel or AMD, be comparable to a good Octane system ?

1) AMD seems to be the best bang for the buck by a mile
2) A farm with 10 threadrippers (32 core/64 threads) will probably be faster than 4x 1080Ti (not sure about 4x 2080Ti)
3) If you add a good denoiser to your pipeline, CPUs will be the most inexpensive way to go forward.

Why would someone spend $10,000 on a threadripper farm to render faster than less than $3,000 for 4x 1080Ti's? And denoiser's won't work in every situation by any means.

Nevertheless it is worth comparing just to give an idea. Regarding cost, the Octane licensing is fairly schizophrenic, and their offline dongle "solution" is quite poor in my view, so with LW at least the renderer is there to keep. I admit dreaming, but the $7000 difference could be justified if the work was always there to turn over.

yeah, those little external racks look the way to go.

I'm not so sure that a farm with 10 tr has a price of 10.000$..... maybe more than 30.000$?
And yes as you say, denoiser is good for still, but animations need a lot of samples to have a clean no-flicker denoise. Often so many samples are enough without using denoise (this in octane, I think it is the same in lw2019).

Choose your weapon GPU or CPU rendering

hope NewTek adds GPU rendering, i'll definitely go CPU + GPU
all other apps are doing it.

no fan of network rendering solutions in Octane though.

Well, you can lower all samples and for a Full HD sequence, render in 8k (4-8 min / frame) and then do a downscale+denoise. Works very well. Neat video does a great job with image sequences.

EDIT: In this case I'm refering to my machine and not a threadripper btw... see signature below.

Yes, but why?
There appears to be certain pins blocked out!

Edit:just seen your reply erikals.
This is why I suggested an extinguisher.
Seems very ‘hacked’.
