In just got a bunch of FBX files from a client. I'm working in LW 11.6 on a mac and I can't open them. I saw someplace that lightwave should be able to open them but I can't make it work.

Unfortunately I can't post any of them here for copyright reasons.

The FBX version may be newer than what LW 11 supports. Consider a free converter to an older FBX format:

You might also confirm that the FBX files are valid in a free viewer:

Thanks. I didn't get any image files with this but there's UV maps on everything. Are the maps embedded in FBX or am I just missing some files?

A FBX file may or may not have embedded textures. If the FBX file does contain them, they need to be standard materials for interchange with other apps. Non-standard materials do not translate well.

Also, the free version of Unity can extract FBX images for you, if you can't find another way to do it.

Also, FBX's can be opened in both Modeler and Layout. In Modeler, you get an option of using seperate layers. Sometimes this is a plus so you might want to test both ways.

In Layout, a bone heirarchy gets created if the original had rigging, but in LW it's only FK.

My copy of Lightwave won't open them. I have to suffer through using old software on an old computer until I get paid for this job. This should all get a lot easier with some $$$

What you might try then is open your FBX's in DAZ, (it's free for the d/l). From there export to obj. Probably won't have textures though.

Lightwave 2018 converted these, quick as a wink. I didn't get any textures but I got files without the annoying triangulation that the client's obj files contained.

If there were textures, the FBX import process will create a separate folder with an .fbm extension but somewhere in the process when the LW scene structure gets created, an .images folder gets created too. Even so, they'd normally show up in Layout.

Also, there a handy tool called Merge Triangles in the Construction Tab that works well. Pay atention though as some models may require further special treatment in some areas.
